“Great Food and Mr Gao Rocks”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2012

Stayed here in the extreame low season on Phayam (weather was great) me and my girlfriend were having a fine time trying to find places open to eat in the eve. Somebody suggested that Mr Gaos stays open all year so we dropped by and moved in for a week.

The Beach is great and we paid around 500 bht for our room which maybe a little high for off season on Phayam but bearing in mind he does stay open all year and has to run the Electric it was fine.

The food here is very good and nice prices too its my second fav place to eat on phayam. This place is packed high season with people who return year after year for the beach, Food and of course Mr Gao.

We found ourselves the only guests at the time of year (i think we were the only tourists left on the island late june) And in the eve we were invited to sit in with Mr Gao and the staff for an eve of stories and whiskey. My fav was the Penang curry made with pork and the massaman. Prices are cheap and portions if i remeber were large.

Rooms a step up from basic bungalow types, basic and comfortable facing the lovely beach at aow kow kwai.

Every morning swimming is great and for 3 days running my morning dip was extra special by the family of six or so Sea otters who would join me for my morning swim. These i think are quite rare in thailand and the local name in Meow nam meening water cat.

The staff had very limited english although this did not really pose much of a problem and they were very friendly and kept the beach and bungalows very clean.

Mr gao is well liked and respected on the island and always makes time to ask about your day and see if your stay at his place is ok. If you find any thing amiss just mention it and it will be sorted out quickly.

Ever wondered why some places are empty and others full well Mr Gao on Ko Payam is an example of what to do in getting it right. So many other resorts after a few days treat you as if you were not there , not Mr Gao. We stayed for 12 nights in this resort and loved every minute of it. The food was great with an interesting menu , the resorts bungalows were nicely furnished and cleaned to a high standard and the staff were helpful without being obtrusive.
Ko Phayam beach is a jewel of gold soft sand that allows swimming when the tide is in or out.
We were only disturbed once in the night by a fuul moon party but this was a little price to pay for such a super resort at the super price of 900 Bhat a night. Other beach proprieters could learn alot from Mr Gao.

Excellent place to stay and for 800 bahts night it makes for an affordable holiday. The beach is very sandy and close to the bungalows and there is a kayak for hire for the adventurous. You see the odd other soul so it's not completely isolated. It is very easy to escape from the stresses of the world at Mr Goa's. The mosquito nets are good quality and fit all the way round the bed.
The restaurant is one of the best and the staff are very friendly and efficient.

Room Tip: Mr Gao's is far enough away from the earth-shattering all night music of the Hippy Bar so that y...

Once again, Lonely planet did not steer me wrong. It should of been the top pick, I checked out the other places on both beaches, and this was the best if you are looking for private, quaint and unique with a stretch of a beautiful beach almost to yourself. The unique character of Mr. Goa was the bungalows which are traditional style made of wood and natural materials, and had these great lounge decks out front with large cushions to lay on. The restaurant was fantastic, and people came from other places, even the vacationers that were out on their boats, parked close by and came to shore to dine here! Mr.Goa is famliy run, and the service shows that, they are always welcoming and friendly, and traveleing by myself, always made me feel like they were glad I was there.. If you havent been, Ko Phayam is a great Gem of a island, quiet beaches, no cars, only a small paved motorcycle path lined with green fields of flowers and trees. If I felt more comfortable on a motorbike i would of rented one myself! Its a great way to see the Island. The other beach was a little more developed with more concrete style places, and the places by Mr. Goa have all wood bungalows, and that lost island feel. LOVED IT! Cant wait to go back!

Well, not quite as private but since there were only two other tourists seemingly on the entire island it felt like a private beach. The bungalow was very nice overlooking the beach but it still is a long way from full day electricity. Then again Ko Phayam is still a long way from mass tourism and we sincerely hope it stays that way. So if you don't mind lighting candles after ten pm this just might be one of the last paradises on earth

The approach to the place is down a very picturesque little lane and when you arrive, it is so pretty it immediately fills you with a sense of well being and makes you want to stay, which we did for 3 days and boy were we lucky to. The bungalow was spotless with a great bathroom and verandah that was great to sit out on.

The restuarant served really great food and had such a beautiful setting that we were happy to hang out there most of the time.

It gets booked out so advisable to confirm in advance; when we were there we saw many people drop by and ask for accommodation, such was the location and popularity of the place,

Service exceptional and they are vey clued up to what their clients want. For example, when we were eating with friends, Mrs Gao noted down our orders seperately and when it came to paying for everything at the end of our trip (accommodation, food, intenet use etc), each item was accurately recorded per person.

The noise of the frogs at night is incredibly loud, try and avoid staying in room 8 for that reason. Best bungalow are rooms 9 or 10.

It was definitely on the nicest part of the island, away from the hippy bars of Ao Yai Bay although at night you could walk up the beach to a bar called 'Hippy Bar' which was exactly that.

This is not a thumping, party place and the electricy is only on from 4 until around 10.30 pm so best to bring a torch.

Highly recommended.
