5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2012

Uptil now I have stayed three times at this hotel & they have managed to keep up their standards. It is the only place to stay considering the local political & secretarian turmoils taking place nowadays being the safest & well equipped joint in the city. Food is very good considering the given circumstances & the staff is very friendly (actually I know many of them by now). Rooms are adequate in space & well kept. Last time I stayed with my wife & she loved it.

Room Tip: Ask for the room with the city view on the same level as the reception & avoid road travel to Gi...

We had free airport pick-up, and if wanted also drop. This year we stayd longer in the hotel than planned because there was a travel ban for foreigners to Chitral. The dry mountain air made us thirsty so we bought an electric kettle to make plenty tea and large cups for soup from instant packages.
The lobby and restaurant has been made brighter with new curtains, but the dinner buffets still have too many spicy dishes to our delicate European taste.
The rooms on the lower floor are a bit larger, but are smell of cigaret smoke. Fortunately all the general spaces in the hotel have become non-smoking areas.
The generater on the far left side of the hotel may need some additional rubbers as the hum can be heard in the rooms on that side.
I had four collegues who were first booked in town in the lower cost Rupal Inn, but after looking at their messy and un-clean rooms, they came running to the Serena.
I rate the value as 'excellent' because for what we payd for the three week stay.

Room Tip: Ask for non-smoking or luxory rooms on the east side, awy from the generator.

We stayed here in May 2011, on our first few nights in the Northern Areas. The hotel is in log cabin style and has superb views over the Gilgit valley to the towering peaks of the Himalaya. We booked into a deluxe room (the cheaper rooms were a bit dank and smelt of smoke) which was extremely clean, comfortable and basically like a four star room anywhere round the world. The suite had a great balcony with wonderful views, perfect for a cheeky private sundowner.

On the downside, the hotel staff weren't very knowledgeable on the local area and were a bit lazy and unhelpful.

We stayed here many years on business trips, as it is the best hotel in town and we are always warmly welcomed by the staff. All rooms and the spacious restaurant area are warm in the winter and have the spectacular view. The telephone repeater tower is new.
Rooms are small but well equipped with free coffee-tea maker and water. Because rooms are small and have thick curtains they are rapidly heated up. Warm shower is excellent. During the summer they are rapidly cool.
Business area is free when own computer with wireless is used.
Spacious general areas with comfortable sitting areas and tea service from restaurant.
Power cuts or power switches are regularly in the entire town, but having a laptop avoids data loss.
The restaurant serves great buffets for special occasions, which are frequent. The kitchen has become more hot-spicy over the years; even European food is sometimes chillied up. This is a pity because local traditional food is not hot-spicy at all.
From the junction below the hotel the mini transport can be taken down to town for little money but also taxis can be called.
Security at hotel entrance is increasing annually.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms near the road side because of the generator

The Serena, Gilgit is reminiscent of a ski lodge, with pleasantly furnished, comfortable and warm (reverse cycle a/c units) rooms (we were there in Feb) with good service and a great outlook. However the rooms are on the small side and the bathrooms although clean and attractively lined with the local green stone are v small and in need of some updating. However there's no shortage of hot water and ample towels. (there are some recently refurbished suites which looked great but are much more expensive - Rps12-15,000 compared with Rps 6000 for a standard double)

The restaurant has magnificent views and food is good but not outstanding, although the fresh orange juice and home made jams are a nice touch. The hotel grounds too are pleasant and would be great in warmer weather.

The location is quiet and although near the barracks in the military cantonment section of town 3-4km east from the bazaar, is secure in a town which is full of armed soldiers, police and bristling with sandbagged check points and jeeps with machine guns! Despite this everyone seems v friendly and relaxed.

Compared with the Serena in Swat which charges the same price (Rps 6000-6500 per night inc b'fast and tax) it's not as good value and charges for internet access (in the b/centre, not available in the rooms). Service is generally good and friendly,

Our main problem was the erratic power supply which went on and off a dozen times an evening. The generator (v noisy so stay to the right side of the entrance) cuts in pretty quickly but it means constantly having to restart the a/c unit and could play havoc with electrical gear

  • Liked — The location and views
  • Disliked — The eratic electricity, small bathroom
