“The only place you should stay in Bagan”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2014

I would not stay anywhere else in Bagan. The location is simply perfect: it is quiet but you’re only meters away from amazing temples and facing several bicycles/electric bikes rental shops. We passed by 2 other well known hotels in the area (supposed to be even more luxurious) but the location wasn’t as good at all. Rooms are nice and very clean. Service is outstanding and the breakfast is very good. Service at the spa is also excellent.

I found the prices at the hotel restaurant too high according to the food quality what we’ve seen anywhere else but a simple 30 seconds walk will bring to very good and much cheaper restaurants!

If you’re planning a trip to Bagan, don’t go anywhere else!

The rooms, grounds and location are great and the staff are friendly.
However, a toasted chicken sandwich I had for lunch led to food poisoning 2 hours later. I recovered the following day but the hotel management were not at all interested. Even without this I felt the food on offer was over-priced and not very interesting. The Thai restaurant 50 yards outside the entrance, on the right, served excellent meals at a fraction of the price.
In summary I would stay there but avoid the restaurant for lunch and dinner

Well located just on the edge of the old town. The rooms must have been beautiful when the property first opened with all of the wood details but it is now in need of a renovation. It also doesn't seem to be very clean although this could be due to the amount of dust in Bagan. The food choices are not great for lunch and dinner. Breakfast was average.

The rooms are like cabins with own entry. The bedrooms are a good size and the bathrooms were clean with necessary toiletries . I found breakfast to be a bit chaotic with not enough tables and we kept being told to sit outside when we did not want to and there were tables that could be cleared. The dinner menu was not very exciting so the next day we went out. It is a shame as a good chef could make this a really good place to stay while exploring Bagan

I enjoyed my stay at the Hotel @Tharabar Gate, the staff are wonderful.

I arrived at the hotel at 8am and my room was ready for me, an unexpected treat.

The rooms are very spacious, have good bathrooms and their own sundeck.

The accommodation is little terraced cottages set in a lush tropical garden, I loved it.

The restaurant and bar at the hotel are both very good.

The pilots who do the Bagan Balloon flights eat and drink here and say it's the best place in town for food.

It's got all the bits, pool etc.

The wifi internet was quite poor, even by Myanmar standards.

Would I go back? Yes, I probably would.

We stayed at the Tharabar gate on our recent trip to Bagan, Myanmar. The drive to the hotel from airport was only 30min but our room was not ready when we arrived. However, the hotel staff were nice enough to allow us to have breakfast (6-10am) so we made good use of our spare time. The entire place is designed keeping nature/greenery at the core which is quite picturesque. The room is big with high ceiling and has a touch of old burmese architecture. Our room had a nice patio with sundeck for two..However be warned that a road passes right next to the hotel wall which is bordering all the rooms which have patios looking outward. So during daytime, if you happen to be sunbathing - expect a dust shower! Also be aware of small lizard sighting in the room - walls - we had spotted one each night. SO if some of you is anything like my mom, then you'd better get the room properly sprayed.
Breakfast is standard with a adequate spread of bread, egg-station and some 4-5 daily options of baked beans, some meats and pancakes. It's nothing great but good hearty meal to last us through the day. All the staff are very friendly and attentive to any request.
Located right at the old bagan wall, the hotel is within walking distance of numerous ancient pagodas. You can easily rent a bike or walk and spend the afternoon exploring the mystical pagodas.
Evening dinner is nicely organized with lots of candles by the pool, one has the option of sitting inside or outdoors. Internet connection (like in all myanmar) is very patchy. Generally, the lobby has better connectivity compared to the rooms.
At the time of our stay, the Ananda pagoda festival was going on and that involved nightly 'melas' or 'gatherings' where blaring music was the order of the day or rather night ...it goes on well beyond midnight. The hotel was nice enough to offer earplugs but fortunately our room was way back inside and therefore we were spared the trouble of sleeping with earplugs.

Room Tip: Get the rooms pest controlled

We didn't have the most auspicious start - arriving during a local festival which required music to be played at full volume all night! Luckily this was only the first night (thereafter the hotel was delightfully quiet) and the hotel apologised fulsomely when we arrived. Reception and staff were friendly and efficient, our room was large and well laid out although the small sitting out area was disappointing. Breakfast was very good. There are a number of local restaurants which are worth the visit - the hotel restaurant only appears to provide an overpriced buffet on an evening. Location excellent.

Room Tip: The hotel is quite spread out and we had quite a long walk to our room. If that's an issue try f...
