“Close to the temples, far from everything else”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2013

We stayed in a deluxe river view room, which was really huge, also the bathroom was large. We booked well in advance and payed approx 135 USD, well below the list price at 200 USD.

The room was clean, the beds very hard. Staff were friendly and quite helpful. We rented ebikes at the hotel, 8 USD per day, great fun and a good way to see the temples. We soon found out that Old Bagan was not the best location for us, it's completely dead at nights with very few restaurants. Nyaung U would have suited us better. We had dinner at the hotel three times, but would have preferred to try more other places. Not that the food was bad, it was actually quite good (we had Thai and Myanmar dishes). The breakfast was really good with a large buffet with lots to choose from. The location of the restaurant is also good, under an enormous acacia, overlooking the river. There is also a bar.

The pool is quite large but the location not so appealing. We had massage at the spa, Myanmar style, dressed in pyjamas, no oil. I found it quite painful but my husband liked it.

We never managed to open our webmail here, so the WiFi was even slower than elsewhere in Myanmar.

Room Tip: Riverview is better than garden view

The hotel has beautiful landscaped grounds with a great view of the Ayeyarwaddy River. Our 2nd floor river view room is clean, quite spacious though a bit rustic. From our porch we can see farmers with their buffaloes plowing the field in the morning to get ready for peanut planting.

Lighting is not adequate in our room nor in the bathroom, and the wood panel in the room makes it look even dimmer at night. Bathroom is a good size, it has both a tub with shower, as well as a separate shower area. Water from the shower stall goes to a drain next to the bathtub so part of the floor will be wet.

Breakfast offers a good variety of Asian and Western choices. Bread and pastries are baked on site. Lunch and dinner are average and price is high.

Horse carts are available outside of the hotel. Cost is around $18 for a full day tour and $6 to take you to any restaurant near the Tharabar Gate and bring you back afterwards.

Room Tip: a river view room is worth the extra cost

We loved this hotel for its location in Old Bagan and the peaceful location by the river. We did not want to stay in too high end hotels and the fact that bungalows are cosy and simple kept this hotel in our range of standards. We did appreciate the pool as a nice to have considering the heat in the afternoon. I would definitely stay there again.

As other reviews have said, this place is tired and in need of a revamp- it could be fabulous because of its location and grounds, which are lovely. The deluxe river view rooms are a good size, with a large bathroom, which is unusual for Myanmar- and with a separate bath. The major problem with the rooms are the rock hard beds- I don't think I've ever come across such hard beds! But you can ask for a mattress topper, which makes them ok...
Pity the swimming pool doesn't have a view of the river, but it's a good size pool for proper swimming. I took one look at the spa and decided it looked too basic, and is underground with no ambience.
Reception staff didn't speak good English and our tour group was appalled by the cavalier way they kept our passports on the reception desk in a basket for anyone to pick up! It's all a bit casual....
Wifi was very intermittent and too slow to do much when it was on.
Breakfasts were poor, but with good homemade bread. Dinners were basic but ok. Nice local music playing. Try the hotel next door for dinner- it's a lot more sophisticated!

I stayed for one night during peak season. The room was comfortable and clean. The property is beautiful and right on the river with a restaurant and there is a sitting area out by the river. The ability to relax by the river was wonderful. The staff were very attentive to all of my questions and very helpful. I was impressed by the level of English spoken by all of the staff. I highly recommend this hotel.

This is a fairly nice operation considering the rustic feel of Bagan. A good choice for a family like us, with 2 kids, 3 and 5. The room was quite nice, bathtub good for washing off the grime, & looking out to their pretty gardens, trees, and the river beyond from the big picture window was great. The river view rooms look even nicer but it is such an expensive place for what you get, I am not sure it would be worth it. They charge for everything little and small, so watch out! The pool is in a lovely spot on the grounds but beware, we brought pool ph testing strips bc we have little ones and they do not treat the water whatsoever. It could very well be river water, as our guide said they drink it and believe it to have safe ph levels. We did not get sick from it, but I would be careful. Food is good there and there is a nice breakfast buffet, but they will charge and arm and leg for kids over 5. The location is ok, if you want quiet but it is far from shops and restaurants. Get your taxi from the airport to stop at a shop beforehand to get water, snacks, etc. it was lovely to be so near the temples though.

We had booked a riverside room and with the construction going on were very glad we did. It was in need of an update but well worth the extra to wake up to the wonderful view of boats on the river. We also sat on our balcony and had a beer each evening -- magic.

As it takes a taxi ride and hassle to eat elsewhere we ate at the restaurant which is a delightful location on the lawns looking over the river. The food is pretty ordinary and they never have specials or a change like a BBQ night. There is also the same (or similar) entertainment every night.

We rented ebikes which was great fun and an excellent way to see some of the minor pagodas with not a tourist in sight. However just outside the town my husband's bike stopped. Luckily it was just by the sign to the Black Bamboo restaurant so he pedalled there (you wouldn't want to pedal too far as they are heavier than a normal bike and it was very hot. On calling the hotel they said they would bring a replacement in 20 minutes. Well over an hour later (but luckily we had a delicious lunch in this to be recommended cafe) they turned up with a new battery but not a word of apology (nor was there an apology from desk staff when we got back). All part of the adventure!

We organised a sunset boat trip at the nearby jetty for $15 just the 2 of us on a big boat. It was a wonderful thing to do and I can recommend it. They motor for some distance up the river and then move out into the middle and cut the engines so you drift peacefully back watching the sun set over some of the 3000 pagodas.

Room Tip: Pay the extra and treat yourself to a riverside room.
