Be prepared for the area that these temples cover...was it 21 or 23 square miles?? Either way, it's vast. The very best way to get an idea of the sheer scale of things is to take the early morning "Balloons Over Bagan" ride. Yes. it's expensive...$325 or so. But as a part of your overall cost of visiting Burma this is only a relatively small expenditure. And IMHO worth every dime in allowing you to fully grasp the amazing sight as the sun rises over the hills. (No,
I'm not related to, married to, or on debt to any one concerned with B.O.B.!!)
Having done that you'l still need a horse cart (or, for the very fittest, a bike) to get around. There are over 3,000 monuments so you won't see them all. Stick to those rated highly by the guide books and be sure to see some of those with the best interior murals. BRING A FLASHLIGHT and a local guide is worth it here.
