“Amazing - Almost as good as Angkor Wat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

Amazing temple complex. Would recommend the horse and cart option to take you around as they are very spread out and in the heat the cycling would become difficult. Go to the big step temple for the sunset (really famous). You will be required to show the $10 government fee receipt only when going to the big step temple for the sunset

“Got to be seen to be believed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

The scale of Bagan's temples is truly amazing. There are hundreds. We spent 3 days in the area, hired push bikes to make our own way and see what we wanted to see. Amazing to think that they were built so long ago. Some of the restoration is a little clumsy but take the time to climb to the top (where you're allowed) of the temples and just wonder at the views... temples to the east, west, north and south. Wow.

“So much to see you need three days”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

We spent three days in the area and two days rode bikes all around (watch out for thorns=flat tires) stopping at the temples as we chose. The middle day we had a guide. We really enjoyed it and didn't feel rushed. Take your time to look at the architecture and craftsmanship. Incredible these were built so long ago and yes, I'm aware there's been some government-assistance, but the paintings and murals inside are spectacular.

“Amazing views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

Temples, Stupas and ruins as far as the eye can see. A dusty, beautiful and dream-like place. Not to be missed. However, some visitors were not courteous - climbing on prohibited areas, wearing inappropriate clothing to temples and just being loud.

“Bagan : wonder and tricks”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

Bagan temples are expanded on a large surface and are best visited by bike. Try to find a full tyre bike ; there are at the vegetarian restaurant on main street. Otherwise normal charge to fix a flat tyre should be 300 kyats and not 1000 or more... Some temples are unguarded and you can go by yourself to the upper terrace have a solo view on the site ; otherwise , official sunset viewers as Shwesandaw are really overcrowded . Such isolated temples can be found near the road from airport to new Bagan. There are also beautiful ones with terraces ,frescoes , friendly guard just south of the watchtower - which is a horror .
Bagan is a city of officialized tourist racket : taxis are 5 times more expensive than Yangon or Mandalay(5000 kyats for 3km to the airport , you have 15km.in Mandalay for this price) and moto taxi ing is forbidden , though it is common in Mandalay . The official reason is danger ; of course it is just a way to force visitors to use taxi Mafia. By the way , if you start walking with a backpack to the airport , the price may fall to 2000 kyats!
The hotels are also overpriced , as everywhere in Myanmar. Don't count on wifi : it works well in Mandalay but 0 in Bagan (late january 2013). There are frequent power cuts , so that the beautiful terrasse cafe on the Irrouady river... do not serve coffe , tea , hot or iced , shakes , etc.
About biking : some roads are very dusty or sandy , you may have to push your bike for a while or get lost for a little while. It is part of the game... and you will find somebody to show you the way soon enough.
The souvenir sellers and hawkers can be a crushing bore...
Burmese from other provinces who visit Bagan on festivals are very friendly ; don't make confusion with the touts I just mentionned
