There is little to say, this area is just so magnificent. Don't forget to check out the river as well

“Magnificent Stupas”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

Spectacular views of the thousands of stupas. We climbed a few temples and saw the frescos. I recommend biking through the region.

“Exceptional - but travel beyond the coach parties to see the most interesting sites”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2012

Bagan is an outstanding archeological gem there but in our three days there we found that the best way to enjoy it was to treat it as an opportunity to explore. With 4,000+ temples and pagodas there is a lot to see. And yes, to the untrained eye, a lot of it looks quite similar. But there are some faccinating variations to discover as well. All you need is a guide book and transport: we hired a minibus and driver for 35,000 Kyats a day: just over 40 USD. What that gives you is the freedom to move around the plain and travel some to the less well-trodden paths.

It's incredible that some of the most exceptional locations in Bagan don't (yet) have their own individual entries in TripAdvisor. We'll try to address this but, in the meantime, and in addition to the individual temples and locations already listed, we would really recommend:

- Pyathada Pagoda (sunset)
- Nandamannya (frescoes)
- Payathonzu (exceptional frescoes, especially on the ceiling)
- Thambula Pahto (next to Payathonzu, basically unvisited and home to equally good frescoes)
- Wetkyi in Gubyaukgyi (similar name to another temple, again great for frescoes)
- Upali Thein (unusual ordination hall)
- Shwegugyi (great views from the heart of Old Bagan)

And note that the incredible Dhammanayangyi Pahto is misleadingly listed under Nyaung-U not Bagan.

If you just want to tick Bagan off a list of places it see then you'll be fine sticking to 4 or 5 of the best known temples. But if you want to get a much better feel for the place, try to get off the beaten track and see what you gems you can discover.

“Amazing temple sit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

Amazing site. Extensive, thousands of pagodas and Buddhas, tho' many reconstructed under military regime, but totally worth viewing and spending at least 3 days here
