“The tallest Bagan Temple”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2014

This temple is the tallest temple in Bagan at 61 meters. It is situated in Old Bagan. It is white coloured with gold tipped spires. It is a "boxy" structure and was built in about 1144. The inner passages to the upper levels are closed off for visitors. The inside of the temple is a slight let down after the magnificence of the view of the outside of the structure.
As usual, there are many hawkers near the entrance selling all kinds of souvenirs.

“Best viewed from outside”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2014

You almost feel obliged to go inside this temple due to its sheer size. It lies just inside the city walls on your right if youre on the main road from Nyaung U. At 63m or 150ft it is the tallest of all of Bagan's temples. Its huge white boxy bulk acts as a great reference point and is visible from everywhere. Inside is a let down, steps to upper levels are blocked and there are many vendors here trying to sell you books, gemstones & foreign coins.

“Quite plain inside”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2014

Here we see the only statue of Buddha sitting on a throne. We were told that the original paintings on the walls inside have all been painted away, hence the white walls. Only one part of the temple ceiling has the original paintings still in situ. They ran out of white paint here?

“the magnificence in white”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2013

Belongs to type II temple in Bagan architecture. Built by king Alaungsithu in 11th century. important is two standing door-guardians in eastern entrance. Origin of temple name is from The omniscience of the Buddha and it means knowing thoroughly and seeing widely. The terraces of temple provide good panorama on Bagan fields, hills and river Ayeyarwaddy.

“Omniscience, across the road”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2013

Thatbyinnyu or omniscience is known for its brickwork, they said you can't get a blade between the bricks. The work is amazingly intricate and separate itself from the others.
