“Limited choice in Aceh”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2013

Banda Aceh is a typical "one hotel" city where Hermes is the only realistc alternative for the international traveler. Its a decent hotel where you can easily spend 1-2 nights. The service is very friendly and he rooms are ok if you dont mind the funny smell. There is a small gym with quite modern equipment. Breakfast room is spacious, although the selection of food could be diversified after staying the same for several years.

Travelling with kids is great in Indonesia and this hotel was no exception. Staff were helpful and kind. Our room had everything working and the bbq in the evening was great in terms of quality and price. We had the Deluxe room, which is the standard room, and it was fine in terms of comfort and quite spacious! It also had a good bath and a very clean bathroom. Nice pool and gym was reasonably good. Only drawback is that it is a little out of town and unfortunately there is some agreement with taxi drivers that it costs $10 approx to get anywhere, which is not normal practice in Indonesia, that being said, Aceh is different to other parts of Indonesia, and taxis are one example. BTW pulau weh was great! This hotel has a high rack rate but negotiate and on the weekend we got it by asking the airport rate for 650000rp or $65USD so very good value to other hotels in town which are more convenient to sights and other restaurants, but are no where in the same quality league.

Room Tip: Negotiate price especially if staying 2 nights or more

On the face, this is a nice hotel. But if you can find a room where everything works or there's no disgusting smell from the bathroom, you'll be doing well! Breakfast is passable, but the barbeques by the pool most evenings are fantastic. Fresh chicken, meat, fish and seafood with buffet of rice, pasta etc. The gym is fairly good and the air conditioning does a good job when it's turned up. Service in the restaurant is not great. Staff will be standing around chatting while you wait an half an hour for a coffee refill. When they do come, they fill one cup on the table and leave the rest! Doh!!

Room Tip: Check hot water & shower before you accept a room.

As the title says, the HPH is probably the best hotel in Aceh but dont expect international standards.

The hotel in general needs a refresh and the rooms are no exception. The bed is very firm and i suspect the pillows are bulletproof.

The hotel also houses a family KTV where alcohol is available.

The pool is nice but beware about missing tiles and very deep steps. Another note is that the pool area has a restaurant with a singer performing till 2230 daily. Some of this can be heard from rooms facing the pool, but the level of noise does not hit the offensive level.

Servicable but frequent travellers will know to wish for better

Room Tip: Stay away from 226 the view is terrible. Look for rooms slightly further from the pool lounge

I have stayed here for a total of about six weeks over the last year, and it's definitely going downhill. The 'entertainment' every night is singing (of sorts) and tonights' karaoke was led by the General Manager it seems, very unprofessional in my opinion. If people want to do karaoke, that's fine, but not under my bedroom window when I'm trying to work/think/sleep. Wifi is very dodgy and the food is not as good as the street food in Banda Aceh. A general feeling of "can't be bothered" pervades the place.

nice room, fast service, rather cheap price, but foods are either too sweet or too salty

Only used this hotel when I wanted to do some gym work, followed by a quick dip in the outside pool.

The gym is poolside - it has some freeweight bumbells and static weight machines; rowers; cycle machines and steppers - it does the job and for me it was free as I would always go with a family member who had membership.

Air-conditioned obviously and supplies good quality towels to keep the sweat at bay. Also has a drinks machine (5 gallon water bought in). Changing rooms are combined with pool changing room - showers work well and a supply of lockers. I was there 7 times and never so anyone else in the gym, except for who i went with.

Pool is lovely and as with the gym, was always empty.

Great attentive staff who do nothing but smile and pamper to your every request. I was also here several years ago at an International conference and it is as good as it's always been.

Reception area as you would expect from a top hotel.
