“Spectacular View !! But poorly managed hotel !”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013

As our tour guide was diving us up to this hotel suddenly it started to fog up. As we drove higher the fog got thicker and temperature started to drop. Visibility was very poor and we started to shiver in the car. The hotel is up at the rim of the Ngorongoro cater with a spectacular panoramic view of the Crater. But it is soooo cold !! All of a sudden we felt like we were in a ski resort. And the hotel sort of resembles a sky resort lodge. We were not prepared for this sort of cold weather in August in Africa. Our suite was nice with a magnificent view of the crater. Bedroom upstairs seating room downstairs. It was very cold in the rooms and we tried to turn on the heater ,it did not work! We called housekeeping for assistance and we were told the heaters do not work. We were so furious!! There was a big screen TV in the seating room and we tried to turn it on to catch up on the news and so on since we have been on a safari tour for the past 3 days. The TV was blank, it had no reception there for we did not get to watch anything. There was no internet service either. We took hot shower and went to the restaurant for the buffet dinner. The restaurant was full and we had to wait a little while to get a table. Food was good. The hot soup and hot food was a nice relief from the freezing temperature. In the morning the fog was so thick we had zero view of the crater from our balcony. We had early breakfast and went on to visit the Ngorongoro crater. This hotel was fully booked while we were there, therefor there is a sizable revenue .But the shutdown of the heater and TV cable is uncalled for. Truly disappointed. The location of the hotel is great and it has a high potential but the way it is managed is very poor. I would not recommend it. Keep in mind this is an expensive hotel there is no reason for the hotel to be this frugal.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the crater have the best view.

The property is STUNNING, with unparalleled views of the crater. but the lobby area is shabby, the dining room looks like a brothel and the food is INEDIBLE! considering the hotel is so expensive, the value for money is ZERO

Upon arrival to the hotel I was impressed by the large lobby/lounge with a great view of the crater. However, the staff members at the reception desk were extremely rude. The shower was also unimpressive during the hours of hot water. The room was dirty in comparison to the other hotels I stayed in during my fifteen days in Tanzania. I had higher expectations for this particular hotel.

The view from our room was superb and we enjoyed the meals. But the love affair ended there. This property is making someone very, very rich and they are putting none of those profits into the hotel. Damp and chilly room with very unreliable hot water, moldy windows, and cobwebs in the corners. Very rude staff on the whole (with a few wonderful exceptions of course, this is Tanzania after all). For the amount of money we were charged for the right to stay here, this Lodge may be the worst value for money that I have ever encountered. Pay a little more and stay elsewhere.

Stayed one night here, wouldn't choose to again.
Location is amazing right on the edge of the crater, but the hotel is very tired and the staff positively unfriendly.
Rooms are very noisy and shower temperature impossible to control.
Staff would not serve drinks from the menu, my friend ordered a cocktail and I ordered a glass of non house wine, we had to get the manager before they would actually sell us the drinks!
They refused to alter our lunch boxes for dietary requirements.
Buffet was very average with a poor selection and badly organised restaurant : tables are too close together and huge queues at breakfast

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the far end of the corridor, less noise from passing guests

I think i would go here again, if ever i should visit Ngorongoro again. And that is totally and entirely because of the view from both rooms and restaurant terrace. Simply breathtaking!
What a delight to sit on the terrace with a beer and review the days tour around the crater on the "map" right beneath your feet...

Else the hotel would definitely need some refurbishing and some careful, ambitious management to lift out of a rather uninspired an gloomy mediocrity.

Our group of 6 stayed at the lodge for one night, although we would have been happy to stay longer. I loved the architecture of the lodge even though it reminded us of the lodge in The Shining. As expressed by many of the reviews, the view of the crater is spectacular and worth a visit for this alone. We had no complaints in relation to the rooms, food or level of service until we checked out. As we were about to drive off one of the managers came running out saying that the hand towels from our room were missing. Initially we laughed this off but it obviously was a serious matter. Eventually our bags were searched but when no towels were found, we were allowed to leave without an apology. At the time I was seriously annoyed but in hindsight it wouldn't stop me from staying again, although I would certainly report any missing towels when we check in!
