“Good view - but impractical and a bit too much...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2013

I wanted to stay here because everyone raves about the place, but after 10 minutes in our room I honestly would have gone somewhere else if that had been possible. The decor is simply too much, "over the top" as other reviewers have remarked, and simply not practical. You can bump your head in the nooks and crannies of the over-decorated bedroom and bathroom. I almost cut myself on the metal latch of the door to the balcony, and the combination of baroque fixtures and vaguely African architecture is simply in bad taste. The fireplace was nice, and indeed necessary, since at 2400 m it was quite cold at night. Food was not as good as at the other lodges that we visited. The staff was very nice, but there was the usual confusion about tipping: the guest information brochure tells you to put the tip into the collective tip box, but there was none, and the manager whispered to me that I should give her the collective tip, but that our personal butler expects a personal tip (quite the opposite, indeed, of what the booklet said). Perhaps we were unlucky, since we enjoyed the view for only a few minutes before the fog set in, but I wouldn't really recommend the Crater Lodge. too expensive and bizarre for what you get.

This camp is unabashedly over the top. First seen you can only gasp. And gasp too at the views towards the crater. Like all And Beyond, they really know how to make you happy. Highly recommended. The main dining, lounge is comfortable and the decor quite extra ordinary. A weird mix of kitch and safari that works.

This place is truly special. The thatched hut rooms are anything but roughing it....beautiful beam work, incredible beds, fire places in every room, and views of the crater and all of the wild game that is roaming around the lodge! Each guest is assigned a butler who takes care of everything from starting your fire each evening, bringing an evening aperitif to the room, and drawing a hot bath in the beautiful stone tub filled with red rose petals! They don't miss a thing. Each evening, guest meeting in the great room to share a pre-dinner drink and stories of the day's game drives. Each family or group then dines on their own in the beautiful dining room, followed by coffee and tea again in the great room. we loved meeting the other guests and hearing of their adventures and travels.

Elephants, hippos, buffalos, et al, roam the grounds at night so no one is allowed to walk to their room without a Masai warrior escort! I am not exaggerating!

Do not miss this place!!!

Totally loved this place, views to the crater from every where in the room. Personal butler takes great care of you, unpack and do your laundry, will wake you up with fresh brewed coffee and the best ginger cookies on earth. You'll be absolutely pampered, even come back to your room to find perfectly chilled wine and a path of candles and roses leading to a perfect temperature bath tub. There's a strip close by and also not far you can visit the Olduvai gorge, one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world.

the location is perfect. every room has the crater view but this is not all. the rooms are super cozy and romantic. there're large bouquets of roses everywhere. it gets very cold at night but then you can fully utilize the fireplace in the room and the electric blankets in bed ensure a good night sleep. i stayed two nights at the tree camp which i absolutely adore. i hear it's smaller than the other two camps and i loved it. fellow guests gathered around the fireplace sipping fine wine and cocktails before moving over to the dining room. i had the good fortune of meeting a really fun couple there and we had so much fun chatting and drinking after dinner. the drive down to the caldera in the morning was so beautiful that it actually made me cry. game viewing was good but then the jeep cant go off road but it's definitely a good start to the tanzania trip. when i returned from the game drive i told my guide that i badly needed a shower as i am covered with dust and he kept on mentioning a bath, so did the staff who took me back to my room. and then i realize why...they had a hot bath with rose petals around the sunken bath waiting for me. what a great touch. i must say something about albatross travel though and this i stress has nothing to do with ngorongoro crater lodge but since i had nowhere else to review a travel agent i have to comment here. albatross is HORRIBLE. if your agent at home is partner with them, use another agent. albatross is based in arusha and they chose to drive me to ngorongoro instead of flying and that was almost 7 hours of extremely bumpy road. that after a long flight has put quite a toll on me and i am still suffering. the massage therapist at the lodge was really good though so she certainly help.

Room Tip: i like the tree camp

There's a real zing to the service at Ngorongoro Crater Lodge these days. Mandy and Chris have worked hard on the food front and if you can take advantage of Chris' extensive wine knowledge. The views of the Crater remain excellent of course and the game viewing is reliable if still a little congested.

My father and I we stayed a couple of days in this lodge ( 15-18.7). It was simply a dream! We stayed in the third camp ( tree camp). Our room was so pretty , but what makes the real difference are the persons at that lodge. My father was not so fit in health, and Albin, Pascal and also the guide Abu, did all to helping him in staying better and cheerful, thanks a lot! Starting from the coffee with roses every morning, to the golf car to go to the restaurant and back, to the little snacks during the safari, until your warm au revoir. The only think.... Game drive... Don t come with the expectation as in private games... It is a national park, and so sightings could be limited for some species ( leopard).
