Like everyone says, this place is over the top luxury--the largest, most sumptous, most opulently decorated accomodation I have ever stayed in, but still with an African/safari vibe despite the crystal chandeliers. The spectacular view; fireplace with leather chairs, sherry and chocolates; the Bose ipod speakers; the balcony furniture--everything about the room is perfection. And the bathroom is as large as the bedroom, with the open air shower, footed bathtub overlooking the crator, fresh roses, bubble bath, separate his and her sinks and dressing table and toilet, even condoms are provided--and of course another balcony with a great view. The Crator Lodge has pretty much thought of everything, and the place oozes pure romance.
Same thing can be said for the public areas, at least for North Camp--each of the 3 camps has its own dining etc. facilities, which helps promote comraderie between the residents of the 15ish bungalows in each camp. The food was fantastic, although perhaps not as amazingly gourmet as one might expect from a 5 star resort, and the alcohol was forever free-flowing (and included in the room rate). In fact, pretty much anything you could think of is included, except vintage wine, spa treatements, and cigars. Everything we asked for was quickly taken care of by our personal butler, including stoking of the fire at midnight and a 6am delivery of coffee and buscuits while we watched the sunrise over the crater. The staff was so attentive, frequently asking or suggesting what else they could do for us. I guess if I had to find something to complain about, I would say it was slightly stuffy and pretty formal--but that's kind of what your paying for!
Staying at the Crator was a total splurge, even at the seriously reduced low season rate, but totally worth it. If you can afford it, its one of the places you really have to see to believe!
