Maasai men armed with spears and bows and arrows escort you to and from dinner to protect you from wildlife nearby. You wake up at midnight to the low grumble of a lion fifty yards from your room. You sit on wide, spacious decks and gaze for hours at Lake Eyasi below. The place has been open for only a year and it's still a but rough around the edges--no screens in the dining room, mismatched tiles in the ENORMOUS bathrooms--but it's a glorious, end-of-the-road place to stay. The food--a fixed menu--is terrific, the rooms are huge, the beds are dreamy. It's not for everyone, but if adventure brings you to Tanzania, then you should feel right at home at this property.
