Our daughter, who was a missionary in Dar es Salaam last year was told about Uhuru by people she worked with there and made the arrangements for us. We were picked up from the
the bus station by employees of the hotel and taken by van to the hostel. We had 3 rooms for 2 people each, and after we settled in to our rooms went down to the dining room for a delicious full course meal...prepared after our order. The service was gracious, the food delicious and fresh..for extremely reasonable prices. The rooms are simple and comfortable. There is a balcony or terrace off of each room. There isn't airconditioning, but a fan and open windows make it comfortable. There are screens on the windows and nets suspended over each single bed. There is a private bath for each room. There is no TV! The grounds are lovely, and the
staff very helpful. They arranged for us to go on a 3 day safari and to climb halfway up Mt. Kiliminjaro, we were very well cared for and felt safe. It was a blessing to stay at Uhuru...an oasis!

  • Liked — The atmosphere...the restaraunt...the staff.
  • Disliked — It was noisy outside and you had to keep the windows open to be cool enough at night.
  • Tips/Secrets: — I wouldn't send my laundry to them on the last day...it takes them a while to do it. Don't be in a rush at meals...it takes time . They don't speak alot of english.

During my seven week stay in Moshi, I stayed at the German Boarding House, run by the Lutheran Uhuru Hostel. The accommodations were basic. I had my own room with two single beds, two desks and a lot of closet space. The German Boarding House is run by a wonderful woman named Mama Meena. There were approximately six rooms for rent there, along with a living room, dining/TV room and porch. There was an informally dedicated women's and men's hallway. The internet cafe was a short walk away on the main Hostel grounds. Everyone who works for LUH is very nice and welcoming. Sometimes I was one of only two people staying at the boarding house and sometimes I was one of a dozen. Not only was it much cheaper than any other hotel in the area ($10/day for nonresidents, but I got the resident rate of $5/day because I was there so long) but it was a wonderful way to meet people and interact with the country that I would have missed out on if I'd stayed in a traditional hotel room.
