“New management!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012

We have been here for 5 nights. We read beforehand the reviews and also our travel book which mentioned it as not the best value actually so we were not too convinced but booked it anyway as the places adjacent were slightly too pricy for us.
All I can say is that we were positively surprised.
The rooms were absolutely okay, very clean, could just need some maintenance here and there but nothing major.
The food was very good and definitely enough. They just start to change here some things due to the new management e.g. The snacks you can order at the beach bar.
Also the service was very nice. Some of the waiters are still a bit inexperienced but the new management is definitely heading into the right direction.
In general the new management is very nice, talks to the guests and takes remarks very seriously so you also feel valued as a guest!
And the beach is awesome!
We had a very nice stay at Mafia Lodge.

After one week at zanzibar we flew to this great location at mafia island. When we arrived, we had a great welcome by almost the whole staff :) We booked a standard room (fullboard), but got an upgrade to superior. The luch and dinner are both a three meal course, and every time you get suprised by the chef. Excellent fish and ice cream. For breakfast you can order pancakes and eggs (any style) The dive shop (which is located at the beach), run by david, daniella and tamu (the dive dog), is very well equipped. We booked a dive package with six dives. The diving at mafia is so much better then at zanzibar. We saw a huge grouper called Jesus by the local fishermen (he is to old to catch and eat, so they let him grow). We also recommend to do a night dive at nudi branch city (house riff), we saw a lot of nudi, flatworms and 2 very large flying gunards. Next year there will be a pool! But you don't miss it because there is a beach with beds and a bar.

We recommend to book fullboard, because there is no supermarket around. And don't forget that this location is at a marine park, so you pay a fee every day (20 p.p.), but it's totally worth it.

Room Tip: All rooms got garden room views

we stayed here for one week as part of our honeymoon. we had an amazing time. the hotel has excellent facilities and a relaxed atmosphere which made our stay so memorable. the food was absolutely delicious - freshly caught seafood put into a sophisticated and balanced menu. we had no trouble putting away the 3 course lunches! all the staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. the beach is beautiful with hammocks, comfortable sun loungers and a beach bar. the beach is also secluded and good for swimming.

we took full advantage of the dive centre and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone from beginner to expert. the instructors were professional and a lot of fun. we also did several excursions which gave us a good appreciation of the area and were good value for money.

we would like to thank the manager Patrick Montair who went the extra mile to make sure we had an amazing week!

This place offer super relaxing time. You can enjoy doing nothing on the beach or beeping active and enjoy the sea world, snorkeling or diving, which is realy amazing. If you want to see the whale sharks, autumn is good time. Otherwise huge groopers and other colorful fish is plantyful there. The place was used by government before, so the complex is huge, good for walks.

Room Tip: All rooms have sea view

Nice hotel with very friendly staff. We had a family room which was nice, clean and spacy, but old and worn out - problems with the drains in zink and shower, which they did fix after reporting it to the reception. The food is nice, but a little same-same...
The beach is OK, but not great, however there is a diving center conected to the hotel, with a belgian owner, David, that is great. The gear is in perfect conditions, the diving sites spectacular and David and his staff offers great service!

In the very beginning I want to mention that since a couple of months the lodge has new management, so a lot of positive changes to be expected.
The place is beautiful, right on the beach. Rooms are fine, good change from luxury hotels for 4-5 days. Bathrooms need renovation. Overall really nice experience. For whale sharks come in November.
