This immense national marine park is a national treasure, and it affords protection to an immense variety of species. We visited during the annual whale shark migration, which was an awesome spectacle. However, the day we visited the whale sharks, there was a proliferation of motor boats, and about 20 snorkelers in the water. While the whale sharks are not affected by the snorkelers, the constant drone of motors and stalking the whale sharks drives them deep underwater and is not a good conservation practice (the whales may go elsewhere). So the marine park managers need to get better protocols in place. Seeing the whale sharks from a dhow or katamaran would be an entirely different experience. Or limiting the number of boats, and using fewer, but bigger craft, would also help.
