“This staff is priceless!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012

We have stayed in Didimiza guest house in early august 2012. For the largest part of our stay, we were the only guests. Since all the above recommendations describe the hotels facilities in a correct way, I would like to add what I especially liked about Didimiza, which was their staff. The cook does his very best to prepare a wonderful meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner (off course, you can decide whether you want to have lunch/dinner their, but since it's so isolated we took most of our dinners there. Mohammed is I think the manager, his English is perfect, he is authentic, honest and extremely motivated into improving the guesthouse even more. The man who took us to trips (snorkeling, sandbank) is very interested in our lives, provides high service and is just a pleasure to spend time with. For us, the staff at Didimiza made our stay a special one. For all the people going there; enjoy!

Clean rooms, and amazingly prepared local food. The staff are very friendly and attentive. The bungalows are powered by solar power and there is no air conditioning, fan or hot water. We went in August where the weather is a bit cooler, so this was not a problem for us.

There is a beach a few meters away, however the tide will dictate when it is possible to swim around there. Also, there are a lot of mangroves which can make it difficult to swim or walk around that area. However, the guesthouse is located a few minutes drive from Mafia Marine park, which which is gorgeous, but can be crowded. We did see dolphins which was a plus :) For 25 USD a night Didimiza is great value for money. However, keep in mind that you will need to pay 20 USD per person to enter the Marine park. For those traveling on a budget, go to Didimiza.

My sister and I stayed there in March of 2012. We were picked up at the airport, but very nice and happy staff. The location is very remote, which is nice and quiet, and that is really the reason to go to mafia, there isnt much speed and action, just relaxing and chilling. Didimiza i perfect for just relaxing and enjoying ur self!

The food was amazing! Even for a picky-eater like myself, i enjoyed it a lot! Everything fresh, and health, and yummy! Just remember to agree on the price of food when u arrive.

There is a strip of beach that you have for yourself, except for the occasional local walking by. But swimming isnt possible, because of the tides.

The one thing that was a major negative thing for us, is that the room didnt have fans or anything. The nights were very hot, and at times uncomfortable. Imporant for them to fix that!

PS: The owner is a sweetheart! Does everything he can to make sure you have everything you need! And try the snorkeling! :)

I spend 7 beautiful days at Mafia and decided to state in a rather objective manner some information on Didimiza. I do this particularly because I highly enjoyed the stay and I think what they really lack is some good information on them :-)
So this is how I found it:

Located in one of Africa’s most beautiful Marine National Parks at the Southeast part of Mafia Island lies the familial budget lodge – separated from the Indian Ocean only by a few Mangrove Trees and 100m to the quiet beach at westside. If you are dreaming of tranquil holidays in a private chalet with a view on palm trees and the sound of the ocean, if you enjoy the bustling activity of an African community coupled with the warmth of the Didimiza Team, then Didimiza Guest House is definitely what you are looking for.

Open for guests since the beginning of 2010, Didimiza Guest House is one of the very few budget options on this beautiful remote island where you will otherwise only find top end lodges. Surprisingly, Mafia Island is still off the beaten track and largely undiscovered by mass tourism. However, white beaches, palm trees and the turquois water of the Indian Ocean await you and compared to its neighbours Zanzibar and Pemba, Mafia Island will guarantee you exclusiveness.

Their Chalets

At present, Didimiza Guest House has three chalets all with private bathrooms, double beds and mosquito nets. One of the chalets contains two separated but connected rooms and can perfectly accommodate a family. All the chalets have verandas from where you can enjoy the breeze of the ocean, a sundowner or relax after a day exploring the stunning underwater landscape of the Marine National Park.

All double rooms are at 35 USD/day including breakfast and at 30 USD/day if booked as single.

NOTE: Every guest has to pay Marine Park Fees which are 20 USD per person per day; children under 15 years pay half the price.

The Restaurant

All rates at Didimiza Guest House include full breakfast for a perfect start in the day. The offer varies according to season but be assured that the cook tries his very best to provide you with fresh fruits and a mixture of local and international breakfast options.

They also offer lunch (10 USD) and dinner (15 USD). The chef, who is said to have been trained on Zanzibar and worked for different top end lodges on Mafia Island, will prepare a three-course menu for you that once again combines international dishes with what he finds on the local market and in the nearby ocean.

They also sell water, soft drinks and beers in the restaurant.

How to get there

The easiest and most convenient way to get to Mafia Island is via air. Two aviation companies are operating on the route between Dar es Salaam and Mafia: Coastal Aviation (www.coastal.cc) and Tropical Air (www.tropicalair.co.tz). On how to get to Mafia Island by boat, check the information in the Lonely Planet (approx. 24h from Dar es Salaam).

Didimiza offers airport pick-up from Kilindoni Airstrip for 30 USD per vehicle each way. The vehicle can easily fit six people with luggage.

What to discover on Mafia Island

Without any doubt the Marine National Park is the biggest attraction of Mafia. Being the largest Marine Park in the Indian Ocean it shelters a unique complex of estuarine, mangrove, coral reef and marine-channel eco-systems with more than 400 different species of fish.

The best way to explore the park is of course through a diving mask. Whether you prefer snorkeling or scuba diving, the under water landscape and variety of coral reeves and under water life is overwhelming. Although we do not operate as a diving center, there are different well-equipped and professional centers in nearby Utende village has assisted us to find the activities you are looking for. Scuba diving, PADI diving courses, snorkeling, swimming with whale sharks, trips to a nearby sand banks or to other places on the island are easily arranged with these centers on short notice.

Right across the bay from Utende village lies Chole Island, a very small and untouched island with only one tourist accommodation. One of their staff grew up on Chole and was happy to show us around and make us familiar with the way people live on the island and how they build the famous Tanzanian dhows. You can also explore the ruins of … while enjoying a great view on Mafia Island and the surrounding Chole Bay.

We stayed at Didimiza in October 2011. It's a cosy place with only 3 bungalows so far, arranged in a big garden. It is located near Chole Bay, but you have to take a 20min walk to get to the beach/diving area, so it's advisable to rent a bicycle for example at Maremeta Lodge.
The rooms are clean and tidy, are ensuite with a shower/toilet and are really good value (35 $ /room). In font of each house is a veranda where you can put your feet in the sand, have a beer and relax...
If you want to have dinner at Didimiza, tell them in advance as they prepare everything fresh. The price per person for the dinner is not that cheep therefore it's good and they serve you plenty!
Be aware when you do any tour with Mohammed that nothing is for free, it's advisable to talk about costs before starting any trip.
have fun and enjoy!

As we read the past reviews we were looking forward to the same. The meal was very good but the prices went way up. We feel that that the $15 was a lot for our fish dinner. The beach was nice but un swimmable. We were given rides to Big Blu and picked up so that was a good perk. They also let us us the bikes to explore town. I recommend but think if you want to pay $15. for the usual fish dinner. The staff was nice as well. We were the only ones staying there.

After 1 month travelling around Tanzania we finally head to Mafia Island. We previously found Didimiza beach GH in Trip Advisor and due to they don't have website we booked eyeblinded by phone.

Our experience in low budget GH's in Tanzania was not great so we arrived without expectations, but our surprise was finding not only the most beautiful place in the island, but also a great staff, and the best food ever had in Tanzania.

The 2 only bungalows built by the moment have nice details and are very clean and beautiful!

Ahmad and the staff were so kind and friendly with us that one week later they called us just to know if our trip back to the mainland was ok.

Thank you guys!
