“Average accommodation, excellent location!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

The rooms are quite average, but the restaurant makes great food and the staff is friendly. The hotel is very close to the beach and a shopping centre which makes it a good location. Great place to stay!

Dear Hanro567

Thank you so much for your comments on TripAdvisor. One of Protea Hotel Mossel Bay’s unique selling points is its location. We have a superb location 5 min walk to the beach, harbour, shopping center. Next to the Tourism Bureau and the Dias Museum Complex which houses South Africa’s first post office. We are happy to hear you enjoyed your holiday and look forward to welcoming you home.

I stayed as the Protea Mossel Bay in early January. Over the years I have spent many comfortable night in that hotel which in my opinion is one of the better Protea's. It was still holiday season and very crowded which was good to see, although there were a lot of herds of small children all over the place! With a few exceptions they were being supervised by the mums although in some cases they were allowed to run wild.
The rooms are comfortable but probably due to the number of visitors they had, they did not manage to check out all their light fitting. 02:30 is not the time to find your light does not work when you're in a strange room! They did fix the problem very promptly after it was reported that morning.
I still had some WiFi problems in my room as I did on my previous visit. It is an old building with very thick walls which could contribute to the problems.

Room Tip: For me, the rooms in the main building are preferred. The other rooms are very good too but I would...

Dear Al D

We are privileged to be your host when visiting the Garden Route – thank you for your loyal support. The hotel was exceptionally busy this past December and January, so I do apologize if we slipped up with a light bulb in your room. The WIFI problem is being addressed, the thick sandstone walls does not make it easy, but we have resolved the problem. We look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.

Although our name was misspelt on the reception board the welcome from Peter seemed genuine and friendly. He told us we'd been upgraded to what amounted to a 3 storey apartment which was nice but probably overkill for just the 2 of us.

Anyway, the rooms were fine - 2 balconies included - the large bath sumptuous and the bed comfy. Breakfast was nice although the service a little sloppy. We ate in the house restaurant in the evening and both the food and service was very good this time.

We were glad we only had one night here though because Mossel Bay wasn't what we'd perhaps expected, especially compared with Hermanus the night before - but clearly that's not the hotel's fault.

We really enjoyed staying here, despite it's being a chain hotel. Location is great and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

I find it really annoying however when a hotel falsely advertises that it has free in-room WiFi, which is a false claim in two ways for this hotel.
--Our room (not even one of the end rooms) could just barely connect to the router but the signal was too weak to enable any internet connection. (We were there in a very slow time, too, so expect less in summer.) If you sit in the lobby, it's fine.
--While Protea claim that WiFi is free, it's only free for a limited number of units. Enough for basic e-mail, but you'd have to be buying more airtime if you wanted to do more than that. The Protea website is not up-front about this.

I would not return to Protea hotels again because of this.

Dear Jim F
Thank you very much for posting your comments on Tripadvisor. Protea Hotel Mossel Bay does have a GREAT location walking distance to CBD, Santos Beach, Dias Museum Complex and the Harbour. Our staff are very proud of your compliments – as they strive to exceed guests’ expectations. Thank you for informing us of the weak signal this has been sorted out in that 2 new WIFI aerials have been installed to improve the reception. Protea Hotel Mossel Bay offers free 100mb per room night sold. Hope you enjoy the remainder of your vacation in our beautiful country and remember to “live life slowly …”

My wife and I stayed for one night on our trip to Cape Town. We were pleased to see our name correctly spelled at reception, with a welcome to match, and staff helping out with car parking and a rather long trek to our room with heavy luggage. Our room was adequate for our needs on a stopover, bearing in mind the origins of the hotel building, and even the wi-fi eventually worked. Although we ate dinner at the local Sea Gypsy cafe, the hotel buffet breakfast was perfect. Unfortunately my wife's medical problems had worsened overnight, but the duty hotel manager quickly arranged an appointment that very morning at a local clinic, and gave us precise and accurate driving directions to it - how would that work in the UK I wonder! So we were able to continue on our holiday with only a slight delay and minus the outlay for doctor and medicine fees. If you need to stop in Mossel Bay, this is the hotel to go for. We wish we could have stayed longer.

I had the pleasure to stay at the PROTEA HOTEL in Mossel Bay during a business trip. From check-in up until I left is was a lovely, relaxing experience. The rooms were clean, the bed was excellent and the food for breakfast and dinner was of a very good quality and presentation.
If I had to add and improvement suggestion, the only thing I could say is that the selection of single malt whiskeys and brown rums in the Blue Oyster Bar is very basic and I personally would have adored having more choice.
I therefore highly suggest this hotel for any business traveler or even for holidays.

WOW the TEAM are so proud ! A heartfelt thank you for your very valued comments. We appreciate the recommendation. Maybe with your next visit we would be able to offer a wider variety of whiskeys and rums at the very popular Blue Oyster Cocktail Bar. We look forward to your next visit.
