“A museum with a different vibe!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

Thank you to each and everyone who contributed to the whole experience of this Museum Complex - it feels real - it looks real with the Karveel etc. and the total vibe is just great. Would like to return and spend more time.

“Only Good on a Rainy Day ...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012

Our group went in to see the Replica of the Caravelle built for the 500th anniversary of Bartolomeu Diaz's voyage of 1488. This small vessel redid Diaz' journey in 1988 !!!
The displays seemed disjointed, a hit and miss scenario.
I was more interested in the Horticultural Show that was going on at the time of our short museum visit.

“Allow plenty of time for the museum, grounds and views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

There is a stunning maritime museum with a replica ship of its time. Lovely grounds with lovely sea views and a resident tortoise. The Post Office tree can be found here. Worth an hour if you are passing by.

“Waste of time”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2012

We tried to visit all attractions in the complex but the map provided was not clear. The garden was not well kept. It was difficult to find the Malay Graves in that jungle and impossible to find the "Padrao".

The museum where the caravel is does not have anything interesting to see. Even, you will read a notice warning you that the information provided in the museum has historical and grammar mistakes (???).
Nothing in this museum is original. They are replicas.

So, go to the museum only if you want to post postcards in the Post Office Tree, the first post office in SA. Otherwise, if you are interested in history, buy a book about Dias...

“A lot to see”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2012

There is a lot to see at the Dias Museum Complex. The Shell Museum in the Shirley building is interesting for children and if you have time to read about the different shells. There is the statue of Bartolomeu Dias and the spring where he and other Portuguese explorers got fresh water from 1488 onwards. Then there is the Munro Hoek Cottages and the main attraction the Maritime Museum. Inside the Maritime museum is the Dias Caravel. This live-size replica of the ship Dias used to sail to Mossel Bay in 1488 makes the visit to the museum a must when in Mossel Bay. If you want explore the whole complex plan for al least 2 hours. The Maritime museum can be visited in about an hour.
