“Comfortable stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013

Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights for Gorilla trekking. Given Room 1 (closest to the main hotel complex) which was very comfortable and had a great view of the mountains. If anyone has read a previous bad review re theft, there are now combination/key safes in the rooms. The shower is pretty pathetic,if you have long hair just don't plan to wash it whilst your there. It is cool at night but they do light a fire in your room each night and put a hot water bottle in your bed. I felt warm enough. The food is average, drinks range good. This hotel is fine enough for a stay whilst going to see the Gorillas. They even clean your boots on your return from your trek.

We had to keep reminding ourselves that we were in a corner of Rwanda, far from the relatively better infrastructure of Kigali and close to both Congo and Uganda with all the turmoil of the region. We were there to see gorillas, not the comfort of a hotel.

The hotel is conceptial well though out with roomy units spread out over large grounds, no chance of hearing yet alone seeing other guests. Fittings were minimalist and the bathroom reminded one of the facilities that were usually provided to army conscripts, lights not all of which worked; primitive showers etc.

All meals were served in a buffet style and one did get a chance to see and speak with travellers from other parts of the world. We were all there with the same intentions.

I have since found out that there are better equipped and more expensive places to stay, but as I said the aim was to see gorillas, so one could put up with the inconveniences.

Rooms are spacious, beds comfortable, food was tasty and enjoyable, staff were helpful and friendly. Ask to have fire lit to warm your room, hot water bottles were supplied. We stayed here 2 nights for Gorilla trekking as do most guests, the lounge and fire place is a great place to chat with other guests. It was close and handy to the Parc National des Volcans. The boot cleaning after the hikes was a welcome bonus and they allowed us to shower and change in our room after our hike on check out day. Great entertainment in afternoon with local school dance group.

Stayed here as part of a tour and really enjoyed it. Very close to registration of gorillas. Power only on at certain times but really you shouldn't need power at the times it is not switched on. Each night the fireplace in your room was lot and a hot water bottle placed in your bed. Shower very temporamental with the hot water. Everything clean. Meals buffet and great. Service very good also. Overall I loved my stay here - very pleasant.

I love this place! It is ideal and completely set up for gorilla trekking. The reception is huge and has a fireplace in the centre which is really lovely to sit around drinking red wine!
The food is buffet style and very nice with a big selection to choose from. The rooms are massive with a really nice open fireplace. In the evening a member of the 'Fire Crew' come to light it for you. We had a nap in the afternoon and were woken by Rwandan dancing outside our room on the lawn. After the gorilla trekking they even clean your boots. I love the way everyone has a job here.
I cannot fault this lodge and I think it is important that people remember the reason you come here is to see the amazing gorillas.

We stayed two nights. The rooms were big and rustic and the staff were very friendly and accomodating. We enjoyed our evening wine at the fireplace bar, meeting lots of people from all over the world. Whereas the service in the main building was good, the service in your private bungalow was unpredictable. Sometimes you got warming bottles, sometimes not. Sometimes you got a fire in your room, but then not. Regardless of what you ask for, be prepared you might not get it the same day. The generator hours are not realistic. 4-7am does not make any sense for most people. Also, the breakfast buffet closes at 9am. My wife got diarrhea from dinner, most probably because of the semi heated lamb. But this can happen in any place of the world and we are talking about Rwanda. In general, the food was tasty and good. You have a lot of free time at the Lodge once they drop you off. Unfortunately, the hours of the hotel shop seem to be based off the personal schedule of the store keeper. She only shows up when it's convenient to her. Ask the front desk and theý will call her on her mobile if you want to buy something. A little bit odd, don't you think? If this hotel wants to be more than 3 stars, then begin with the generator. And then with shop keeper. And then, add some small day trips or some local spa offers - there are a lot of bored folks hanging about waiting before or after their gorilla treks looking for something to do other than drink or sleep.

We stayed one night in room 4. Our room was spacious and well appointed. The windows were slats and didn't close fully so our room was chilly, but from the reviews I read before booking it was not nearly as cold as I expected. We closed the curtains around 5pm and lit a fire to get the room warmed up. The bed was comfortable and we had hot water bottles by our feet which made for a pleasant night's sleep. The only thing I would view as a negative, and this is very picky, are the area rugs. They are in need of a good cleaning. Power is by generator and is only on at certain times during the day/evening. We did not have a problem with the schedule. B, L, D are all buffet style dining. The food was very good. In fact, the vegetable lasagna was so good I went back for a second helping. Sandals were provided while our boots were being cleaned after gorilla trekking which was appreciated. The grounds are lovely and our room had a magnificent view of one of the volcanoes. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel to friends and family.
