Number 1, being in Rwanda is cool, as a spot and the weather. 2, seeing a lovely city so clean, as Kigali is, enroute to the gorilla trek, is incredible. 3, the Genocide Museum was inspirational. 4....the Mountain Gorilla View Lodge was nearly located in the mountain tops. I loved the music from the village tribe. Yes, we were able to get a fire started, and one need a boy scout around to do it. Chilly area...take some warm clothes. And, throughout these stays, make sure you have a kazillion $1 bills for tipping. I took $50 worth and wish I had taken $200. $1 tip is certainly appreciated. I will say one thing...the trek for us for vertical and exhausting...and we two 65 year olds were placed in the trek with 6 20 somethings who I think did extreme sports. I swear they did for they didn't even draw a deep breath. We huffed and puffed but our hearts kept pounding. We were grateful to walk downhill at the close. And really enjoyed those gorillas. Then we were off to Uganda to repeat it. I think one gorilla trek is just fine.

Room Tip: I don't know...ours was the last room, closest to the gorillas. I don't know if 36 is there...

We stayed at mountain view lodge in order to be near the Volcan National Parc for a couple of days trekking to see the gorillas in September. The lodge is relatively basic but charming. Comfy bed, wood fire in the room, hot showers available for around half of the day when the generators are on. The food is decent and the bar has beer. If we returned to Ruhengeri we would happily stay at Mountain View again.

We stayed here three nights to see mountain gorillas, golden monkeys and to climb Mount Bisoke. At first glance the lodge was impressive. We had room 3 which was really a really big room with an equally huge bathroom and a great volcano view. At second glance you can see that the rooms are a bit sedated, especially the bathroom, where the toilet was running and the sink did not work properly (which is not funny when you try to wash cloth. They did offer to dry some of our close for free and without us about it so no complaint about the service level). Dont expect privacy because the staff will pop in several times during the evening to make fire, to maintain fire, to give you a heater for the bed etc. And you will need all help provided to keep you warm (including a warm fleece and long underwear). The lack of power supply and hot water during predetermined hours is a bit annoying but maybe it is us europeans being a little to used to comfort not really needed. And the service is great. The first night the outdoor light was out just outside our room. We did not bother reporting it but next day it was fixed. And in the restaurant they are very busy bringing you heaters etc. So you feel warm and cosy during dinner. All in all I think the view is 4 star while the lodge is probably closer to 3 stars. And I forgot my purse which had slipped into a chair or something. They immediatly called us and send it with our travel agency to Kigali so I had it the same day. I was really grateful for that since we were moving on to Tanzania the following day.

We only stayed here one night which was a shame as we had an early start and long drive to the first gorilla trek. The hotel is located near the meeting point for the gorilla trekking and has beautiful views of the volcanoes. The staff are very welcoming and attentive, especially the men who come to tend to your fire as it keeps going out and bring you lovely hot water bottles for the cold nights. The room was huge with an enormous bed and immense bathroom. The electricity goes off during the night when it is pitch black,- a torch in the room would have been useful. The food was good,- buffet lunch and dinner, but a wide selection considering the remote location. The hotel seemed quite empty when we were there ,- the number of people seeing the gorillas is restricted and there seem to be quite a few hotels to choose from. The reception staff were helpful,- we left a camera case by mistake and drove half an hour away before realising, but after a phone call it was retrieved, looked after and brought out to us. This hotel is set-up for catering for the needs of the gorilla trekkers and is a good base.

We spent 2 nights here for our gorilla trek. It is very cold here, make sure you pack for this (even just a long sleeve top and long pants you can sleep in!). The fire in the room doesn't heat up the room a great deal and we had our fire roaring after a lot of perseverance! The rooms are very large, as is the bathroom, and pleasant. The bed was comfortable, and they give you many blankets to combat the cold. The food wasn't spectacular but wouldn't really expect it to be in this remote location. Good place to stay if you are doing the trek, no real complaints.

From previous reviews, I was expecting something very rustic--wrong. It is a lovely place to stay, friendly and accommodating. Our cottage was huge--with a large fireplace and 2 queen beds (for my sister and me), and large bathroom that was adequate. A fire was built in the afternoon (if we were there) and always after dinner when they also put hot water bottles in the bed. Completely charming! And, when you arrived back from a trek, you sat in a chair, someone removed your boots and returned them clean and better than new to your cottage. What is not to love about this place? Also, as often stated, very close to the gorilla & golden monkey trek. Beautiful setting, and the food was good, with many fresh fruits and vegetables and good soups.

I don't know how it happened, but I was expecting a much simpler lodge than the one we actually stayed in during our trip to the mountain gorilla's. So, when entering the room, I was very pleasantly surprised indeed. A nice spacious room, with an equally spacious bathroom.

Almost immediately when we started to settle in our room, one of the room servants came and lit up the fireplace for us. Fireplace you think, right in central Africa? Yes, a fireplace and it was much welcomed. First, our drive from Kigali to the area of the Parc des Volcans was a tough, wet drive, with a few hours of constant rain right up to the last village before we got to the lodge. Furthermore, the altitude at which the lodge is located is over 2000 meters, so it does get a little cold. And we are south of the equator, so it is winter as well. :)

We had one of the lodges that are close to central area and they are all facing the VIrunga mountains. The room has a large window on the front, so when you sit in one of the comfortable chairs, or you lie on your bed, you have this beautiful view to enjoy.

Staff is very friendly and helpful. While checking in, we were treated a lovely cup of ginger tea. And I real the real ginger stuff you can get on Zanzibar as well. Spicy and hot, not the bland stuff we have here in The Netherlands. Umbrellas were waiting for us to shelter us from the rain when we walked to our room.

Food is good, especially considering that it is a buffet for all meals. Dinner had plenty of choice of vegetables, meats and fruits. Breakfast was what we learned to expect for breakfast on this trip. Eggs are made to order by the chef at the buffet. The lunch buffet was similar to the dinner buffet, with loads of choices. Coffee and tea were available as well.

While we enjoyed our dinner, our room was prepared for the night. That meant that a warm water bottle was put in our bed, to take away some of the cold and the damp of the sheets. It sounds a bit silly, I know, but it sure was very comfortable.

All in all a very pleasant place to stay when you want to visit the Parc des Volcans National Park in Rwanda. It is nicely located not too far from the entrance to the park and they are fully aware that most people come here to do the mountain gorilla tracking. They have tailored their operations for that, like a shoe cleaning service when you return from the tracking.

The next time I will be visiting this area, I will surely try to stay here again.
