“Sadly, you can't judge this book by it's cover”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2008

We stayed here for one night before our gorilla trek.
We had originally been booked at the Gorilla's Nest, but back in June I was told that the rate at Gorilla's Nest was increasing from $120 per night to $250 per night.
And from the reviews I had read about it, I was not prepared to pay $250 to stay there.

So, we decided to stay here as a cheaper option.
It is indeed MUCH cheaper at $50 per night. I knew that this lodging would be VERY basic, considering the price.

But we were still disappointed.
It looks much nicer from the outside! The grounds and the exterior of all the buildings actually look pretty nice.
But the room was very drab and dreary and the bathroom was very dingy, with mildew stains on the walls.
The room was very basic, which was expected. There is a small sitting area with a table and two chairs and a bed with foam mattress and two flat pillows.

Our hot water did not work at all when we got there. When you turned it on, no water came out of the pipe. We called them and they did come to the room many times trying to fix it. It only worked intermittently after that.
But the next day, after we had checked out and we were having lunch in the restaurant, there was no water in the public restroom. None to wash your hands or to flush the toilets. So, it appeared that they were having some major water problems on the property.

Back in the bathroom, there was a tub with a hand held sprayer, but no official shower. And with the hot water problems, don't expect to take a shower. We had to just wait for the water to work from the faucet and then just wash ourselves off.
It was also very cold in the room. There is no heat.

We were happy to be leaving after one night.

The restaurant served good food for breakfast and lunch.
And the location is great for the early morning gorilla trek. It is located just about half of a mile to the Park Headquarters.
Those are about the only good things we have to say about this place.

Next time, we'd look for something else.

Having learnt that the price-quality-relationship in East Africa is very poor (compared to many countries in Europe, SE Asia or America) the Kinigi Guesthouse really beats`em all. The double for 50 USD is not more than an unclean, dusty, draughty (there`s an at least 5 cm broad gap between the floor and the door), cold and humid hole and its bathroom a shabby and misty room.
The blankets and towels are therefore never really dry. The worst thing: Water supply! Taking a shower is more like gambling as you never know when the water stops - if it starts at all... Not to mention the hot/warm water supply which we never experienced...
Although the staff is friendly, they don`t work very efficiently: They offered a complimentary shoe-shine service - the shoes were clean afterwards - but soaked! Having had only one pair I had to spend the whole evening in front of the chimney to get them dried.
So did a bunch of other guests as they also benefited from that service.
The question for a discount due to the poor water supply was only answered by a shy giggling, which was a bit annoying as the price is by far too high!
Okay, there are some good things to mention: the gardener did a great job (wished the housekeeping would have done the same...) and the atmosphere in the restaurant and the saloon at the chimney is enjoyable as most of the other guests were nice and sociable.
We only opted for this place as it is close to the Volcano National Park HQ which is the meeting point for the Gorilla Trekknig Tours (it`s only 3 minutes walking distance). But for travellers having their own care, there`s no need to stay so close.
All in all, I would not recommend this place as they only capitalize on the privilege to be so closely located to the Park HQ.
