On deciding to move out of the place we were staying in Nyali, we found Kinondo Poa in the morning and arrived in the afternoon. Boy were we glad we moved.
Kinondo Poa is well off the beaten track, but that's exactly what we wanted. Driving through all those big resorts made us worry a little for what we had signed up for (we're definitely not resort people), but after the long trip - don't take a tuk tuk! - we were pleasantly surprised with what greeted us.
The staff were warm and welcoming, the site and the room just the same. The rooms are spacious, clean and well laid out, and the water cooler and air conditioning were a welcome addition. The grounds are neat and well done, and the swimming pool is clean, if way too warm to be refreshing.
The food was good, with a meat, a fish and a vegetarian option each time. Portion sizes weren't too big either, a problem we've found with several other places we've stayed in Africa.
Shortly after arriving we looked into delaying our flight back to Nairobi - we like it so much there, but unfortunately we couldn't do it, so had to settle for just 18 hours at Kinondo Poa. But they were a great 18 hours. The peacefulness was a blessing, perfect for sunbathing, reading and catching up on 'quiet time', and the small number of rooms meant we never felt crowded by others staying there.
The beach is nice but at low tide it's impossible to swim for the sea urchins. But it was still lovely to lie on the beach and enjoy the sun, especially given that someone had laid out sun beds and mattresses with towels for us.
We were surprised at how little it cost to stay at Kinondo Poa, but you should factor in the 5000 shillings it costs each way to/from the airport - not to mention the 3hour journey!
We look forward to going back for a more extended stay!
