“Grand setting - shame about the staff”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2009

What a spectacular setting - very old country club. Rooms were spacious and well appointed - though a bit tired.

However the staff - from reception to bar/waiting staff were all without exception offhand, uncaring and in some instances downright rude.

After spending three happy visits enjoying good food we were shocked, shaken and disappointed when an inside job robbery from locked rooms during our 4th visit (over breakfast) ruined our stay. What made it worse was that the then management (Manager: Gomeri Kombo, Company: Kenya Hotels Ltd) pretended to care but did nothing to recompense us or replace our lost camera and computer. We were palmed off for over 2 months giving them the benefit of the doubt before writing this. Security is no longer important, sadly, and it seems foreigners may be particularly targetted since 2 locked rooms with foreigners in were targetted at the same time whilst others who had laptops etc with them on business trips were OK.

Great location and lovely place (particularly good food) if you don't mind about security!

Sadly we have to say please avoid for your own good. (David Rowbory, resident in Nairobi.)

This was the location for the rest day on our safari - a chance for the drivers and ourselves to recharge our batteries, and what a place to recharge! With its colonial atmosphere the Lake Naivasha Country Club was superb.

Our room was clean and comfortable, looking out onto the spacious and well maitained gardens. The local birdlife abounded and antelope wandered across the lawns. It was here that we had our first rain since arriving in Kenya - a heavy shower with thunder lasting about 40 minutes. All this served to do was freshen things up a bit and wasn't a problem at all!

The purpose of our safari was to celebrate my wife's 50th birthday and we were pleasantly surprised to find a welcoming letter from the General Manager in our room when we arrived and to find a member of staff delivering a platter of fresh fruit to our room shortly afterwards!

The food in the restaurant was plentiful and well prepared. As usual for most of the lodges, etc. we stayed at, the staff were polite, friendly and extremely helpful.

We had a wonderful stay here during our safari and it was all that we imagined it would be from what we have read about it. The place did not disappoint in any way. We went for a boat ride around the lake and saw hippos, water fowl in vast numbers and on Crescent island there were Giraffes. Just before dark we saw waterbuck grazing on the lawn. The food was very good and staff very accommodating. Just a word about the lake trip. It can become very cold so be prepared and take something warm to wear. After dinner we went into the lounge where we sat around on comfortable chairs before a lovely fire. Just writing about the place, I wish I could be there now!

It was like going back in time to the British colonial period. Beautifully kept gardens and beautifully manicured lawns. Granted some of the things here seem dated, but they fit the setting. If it weren't for the signs warning of wild animals wandering the grounds after sunset, this hotel could be in the US or western Europe. I was there to see the local animals and my friends and I weren't disappointed. We went for an early evening boat ride to see hippos and we saw about 6 fairly close up. My friends got up early enough the next morning to take the walkway from the hotel toward their dock to see the hippos returning to the lake after feeding all night.

We spent 3 days, 2 nights, and have a very enjoyable time. Our 5 year old as well as our 16 year old enjoyed the pool, boat ride across to Crescent Island, walk among the giraffes, wildebeast, zebras, etc, and then a camel ride among other wild animals. The food was tastefully done, with a buffet at every meal. The grounds are beautiful, with numerous sacred ibis everywhere. Comfortable beds, hot showers, just a really nice place to stay.

Just over an hour's drive from Nairobi. The hotel is close to the lake shores, situated in 55 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds. We stayed in a small chalet in amongst the trees.

The room was one of the smallest we stayed in during our stay in Kenya and was in desperate need of reburbishing. The door to the bathroom was of a sliding type and did not stop the steam from the shower coming into the rest of the room. We had hung some clothes in the wardrobe, which ended up very damp from the escaping steam.

Food at the hotel was in the standard buffet style and the chef had gone to extra lengths to present the food well. For one of the lunches he had made a cake in the shape of a Crocodile!

The location of the hotel was really nice and we were able to take some stunning photo's of three different types of Kingfishers, Girraffe and Hippos from the jetty out to the lake.
