“Report from a Mzungu (white woman) who Lived in Kisumu for 6 Months - A Unique Zoo Experience”
If you do not have a chance to go on safari - this is a great zoo by African standards: everything is clean, the animals are well cared for, and you get to see some some great wildlife. The cool part: walking trails, zebras and impala wandering through the park, and a fabulous new resort on the water where you can spend $7-15 on a drink and $40-80 on food. You will be disappointed if you compare Impala Park to Western zoos: the cages are small, and there aren't a lot of animals.
Private fisherman hang out on the lakeshore, and offer boat rides. The best boat rides are in the early morning- where there's an opportunity to see hippos. (They sleep under water during the day.) They'll quote you 4,000ksh for everyone (approx $45) for a ride- and this is when you should start laughing and walk away. Boat rides in town are 1000ksh for everyone, (approx $12), for an hour ride, and the very most you should pay at Impala Park or at Kiboko Bay (resort areas) is 1200ksh (approx $15). Walk away if they charge you any more- because someone else will make an offer for that amount, and you can take a lovely 3 mile ride through the countryside to Kiboko Bay, and catch a ride there instead.
Kiboko Bay is worth the visit- a lovely view, cold drinks, great meals, and a swimming pool to cool off in.
