“Another memorable stay in Kikambala”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2013

This was my second trip to Kikambala in 2 years, again based at the Royal Reserve. This time I was with my son and two friends for part holiday, part working with a local nursery/primary school. We found the hotel to be an excellent base for our purposes - it's reasonably priced, clean and comfortable, the staff very friendly and efficient as always, and the food was really good (much better than last time). It was just the place to cool off and relax after working and chat to other charity workers and holidaymakers.

The hotel was also the most convenient one for us because it was within walking distance of the school and almost next door to the office of our friends Gerald, DJ, Moses and Isaac - the beach boys I had met the last time and kept in touch with. We relied on them for pretty well everything and they were brilliant: organising trips and transport to different places - supermarkets, shopping trips, football matches, holiday excursions; walking us to and from school, carting textbooks and other school stuff. They cooked for us in the village and took us dancing at the village pub. (Wow! How often would you get the chance to do that?) Thanks to them we had absolutely no problem or hassle the whole time we were there doing all the different things we were doing. Asante sana, boys.

So no complaints about the Royal Reserve - we will be staying there next time we are in Kikambala.

We booked through RCI and stayed here in September. We read reviews before our holiday that were slightly concerning so we were not expecting luxury. I agree that the resort is quite tired and in need of TLC, they are looking for investment to bring it up to it's former glory, but it was not as bad as we expected. The staff are really friendly and do their best to give you the best possible holiday. Apart from a couple of evenings the food was good. The main pool is lovely and the whole resort has a quite and calm atmosphere, perfect for unwinding. The rooms are spacious and clean and apart from low water pressure in both showers, they are perfectly adequate.

The resort offers Safaris and trips but we had pre-booked a 4 day safari to Tsavo East, West and Amboseli with JT(Julius Tact) Safaris, which was excellent. We took a day trip to Mombassa and another to Malindi which was arranged by the Beach Boys (Julius, Stallone and Carlos) the trips were taylor-made for the just the two of us. They also took us down the beach one evening for an amazing seafood BBQ. Please don't be afraid to use the beach boys & girls, they are working very hard to make a living and are really lovely people.

Please don't be put off by the bad reviews, we had a lovely holiday and the location and staff make it special! We would definately return.

Room Tip: The beach view rooms are lovely but you pay extra.

This was our third visit - Whilst the hotel is looking a little tired in places and could do with an refurbish we canot fault the staff, service and food. The rooms are clean and serviced regularly, often with floral decorations left on the bed (a lovely touch). The main pool is glorious, clean and refreshing, and for those wanting a sea view there is also another pool, a little more shady and cooler, overlooking the Indian Ocean. At high tide a swim from the beach makes is a super alternative. The resort spa offers a range of treatment and massages (try the 1 hour relaxing - exceptional value)
There is a varied evening entertainment programme provided by local performers. Whilst the resort offers a range of Safaries and Tours you should not rule out the tours etc. offered by the local beach boys (Francis, William and Wensulas), who offer very attractive prices and an excellent serivce. Nothing is to much trouble and they will certailnly make sure you are looked after. Certainly use them if you need a taxi or bookings at local restaurants. (try The Moorings, and La Marina in Mtwapa, The Kilifi Boathouse and The Mnarani Club in Kilifi, or Mariadadies just along the beach). We had a super time, and will be back again in 2014.

Room Tip: There are several rooms on the Ocean side - available at a slight premium - well worth the extra

Though the location is very far from the Airport ( 2 hrs drive) but this is heaven for a beach holiday...
Calm beach with swaying palms....
Lovely clean spacious African villas...
Rocking night shows performed by locals...
Masai Markets are very attractive....
2 big cool pools with lots of water activity...
Lots of games and sporty entertainment for kids and teenagers....
Massage is awesome.... and cheap
very friendly locals...
good place to make a bargain for the big game drive to Tasavo and Nogorangoro...
Just loved the place....

We do not recommend this resort to anybody who has an America Express Card if you leave belongings on your balcony by the morning they have gone, when you are out of your room staff go through your belongings and even if you pay for the hotel safe your valuables are not safe as they go through the safe as well PLEASE DO NOT GO THERE NOT RECOMMENDED

Room Tip: Do not go there

The rooms were decent , the location was really good but the service was poor. Spacious rooms with well appointed fridge and kitchen,. Plumbing and maintenance department took a big dip in comparison to the other hotels.

Room Tip: The cottages overlooking the beach were amazing, insist on them, nothing else will substitute it.

We had an amazing time. We went to this resort purely for the wedding of our son and now our daughter in law. We only stayed here, they actually had their wedding at the Maridadi hotel which is just up the beach. Royal reserve was a lovely place, we read the other reviews but knew what we were letting ourselves in for. I admit that RCI should put some money into the place to spruce it up a little but it was ok, i'm quite fussy when it comes to staying in hotels but this suited me very well. I did take my own net which Im glad I did because ours had holes in it, so we just changed it and then I left it at the orphanage on my return. the staff couldn't do enough for you, they were really friendly, the grandchildren loved it around the pool. As Steve P says, befriend one of the beach boys, or 2 - we became friends with Adam and Julius they were very good indeed - we bought fresh fruit from and other bits and pieces, we even arranged our safar with the beach boys and it was excellent. The hotel tell you not to arrange safaris or trips through beach boys and they tell you not to give them your money before you get your goods but to be honest I think any hotel would tell you this because the beach boys do a good job and by giving them your custom it is taking it away from the hotel. Everyone has to survive but to be honest if I am spending my time in a country with so much poverty I like to think I put some of my money into the community, which we did and I have no grumbles whatsoever, we were looked after very well by the beach boys. If any of you are reading this and are going, if you meet adam or Julius say mamma waynie sends her love! Some of the food we ordered was available but we went out of their peak season really. The weather was good, we had rain quite a few days but only for about 15 minutes then its really hot. The beach boys are regulated by the authorities and have to pay to sell their wares on the beach, befriend them and you will be fine. The hotel does need a bit of tlc but this is up to the time share people - RCI, please don't let it go down hill its too nice. We went for a walk around the village which was very good and we met a young lad called Eric who walked around with us and then he gave me a little gift on the beach a few days later. Lovely lad. Over a 2 week period of eating and drinking in we spent about £550 and this included drinks for others on some occasions and also meals sometimes for our grandchildren. Good holiday had by all and the wedding was fab !! We had manicure and pedicure, they do pester a little but if you are strong and just tell them you are not interested they will leave you alone, although a manicure and pedicure cost me about £16 for both !! very good too.

Room Tip: we were in A5 overlooking the pool and the bar, good room, very quiet.
