“Worst ever”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2009

Fogera features prominently on all Gondar's travel agents' maps. For some obscure reason Lonely Planet put it in the category "Top and Mid Range" hotels.
Very nice view from the garden. That's it. Main building has not seen renovation for at laest 20 years. Breakfast: falling apart toasts, burnt eggs, no juice, no butter. Ask for pancakes, expect caked flour all over. Table cloth will come at request, ironed and creased, with crumbs from past meal and stained all over.

We stayed in bungalo.
Decided to open one of the wardrobes, it was a mistake, never closed again. Door to bathroom never closed in its lifetime. Flash in toilet did not work, bucket was provided. You fill it in, pout into the seat, and level of water on the floor increases proportiuonally. Water is always there, by the way. Bolier did not work. "Chandelier" hung from the celeing on a cable... Towels of intensive grey colour came wiht holes through which I could squeeze my head. And eventually, believe it or not, we brought lice from the place - pubic ones, to make it worse.

Manager tried to cheat us on airport transfer (150 brr vs 100 br in the market).

Oh, yes, they have restaurant, "best in town", we gave it a miss... During night, staff was heard talking vividly and giggling till late, thus disturbing our sleep. Since they were oblivious of what they were doing, we never complained.

Good thing was the whole exercise cost us USD29 for three of us........

We excaped next morning.

Picked this hotel for convenience of location and stayed four nights. Hotel garden cafe with view for drinks was highlight. Stayed three nights in tukul unit and then final night in main building after water line to sink sprang a leak in middle of night. Used towels to keep water out of bedroom. Beds were comfortable with clean bedding. Floor dusty .... did not dare go barefoot. Toilets and sinks in very poor condition and barely usable. Toilet seats broken and just hanging on. No hot water. Mold in showers convinced us to stay out and wash elsewhere. Other guests seemed to be experiencing similar plumbing issues. Management consistently unresponsive to maintenance requests... said they would fix things right away ... but no visible action/results. Despite "VISA" sign at entrance, hotel only took cash and accepted only fresh-looking US currency issued after a certain date.

Hidden at the end of an alley in the city of Gondar (within a walking distance from the piazza and the fort), Fogera Hotel is a nice art-deco Italian period house with four rooms. Each room has its own design. N.3 has rooms covered with flower wallpaper and copies of Italian master paintings, N.4, the most beautiful, has a great wall of stained glass that produces a great light atmosphere. As it is written in the Lonely Planet guide, the rooms ask for a desperate renovation (especially the bathrooms) and the curtains fell dramatically as we tried to open them. Cleanness is also not a great quality here and guests should check their beds before going to sleep. But the property includes bungalows installed in the garden and called tukuls as their design is inspired from local architecture. Tukuls are more recent, clean, comfortable and well equipped. The added value of this place is the shady garden, an excellent place to have a beer on the late afternoon, with dozens of birds – including eagles – flying around you on a very near distance.

  • Liked — The garden scenery
  • Disliked — The quite unclean beds
