“Simply, amazing!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2013

This new eco-lodge is a gem on the way from Gondar to the Simion Mountains. It is perched majestically over a breath-taking mountain landscape, admired and enjoyed for centuries by Ethiopian and British royalty.
The rooms are simple, rustic but clean and comfortable. Electricity is OK, showers are warm, internet not yet. The restaurant is Ethiopian traditional, with good and a great fireplace warming up the evenings and bringing all guests together.
The highlight of the place is the service. The staff literally go out of their way to make the guest comfortable and cater to all their needs. The owner is takes great pride in welcoming the guests and ensuring that all their needs are met. He shares not only the lodge with them - but his mission of transforming the local community through self-sustaining green projects.
An unforgettable experience.

Room Tip: Bring an extra jacket and a flash light, the evenings and nights are cold!

We traveled to North Ethiopia in October 2012, and stayed in the Befikir Kossoye Lodge as a base to explore the Simien Mountains National Park. We were meant to stay one night only but the lodge was so nice and comfortable that we decided to stay one more day. We were very well received by the owner, and were immediately taken on a tour of the facilities. There are very few rooms in small huts, and just behind is one of the most breathtaking view of the park. Our room was basic but very comfortable. Only thing to be aware is that it gets very cold at night, and nor the rooms or the common areas were heated. They did light a fire in the dinner area, and the showers are very hot, so you just need to have the appropriate clothing. The food was great, but perhaps more pricey than you would expect in the middle of nowhere.

We had an excursion planned in the actual park, which is a couple of hours away... The park is amazing but we were quite disappointed by the service of the official guide. While we got to see a lot of monkeys, we never left the most touristic places and had to fight with the guide to finish the full day tour we had paid for. Once the owner of the lodge heard about our mis-adventure, he was appalled by the service we received in the park. The lodge is actually a great base to take some day hikes, and the owner will happily organize a scout to accompany you on a chosen route, which is what we did on the second day. Despite not speaking a word of English, he showed us a lot of wildlife and we got a real glimpse of the true way of living in the area.

That the staff of the lodge is amongst the kindest people we have met in Ethiopia. In addition to catering for all your requests, they also spend a lot of time explaining you about the region and the culture. Of notice is the fact that they are trying to develop the local economy and change mentalities in order to make people more respectful of their environment..... the place is quite new and we were happy to support this wonderful project, while having a very relaxing time in the middle of great nature! warmly recommended!

Traveling in Ethiopia can be tough, seeing the extremities of livelihood, and wondering if all the tourist dollars are actually getting to the people. The Befiker is really exceptional in this respect, particularly in their work to re-forest the surrounding area with indigenous trees. They also support various animal husbandry and gardening projects around Kossoye, and it feels much more 'eco' than some of the other lodges advertised as ecological in Ethiopia! The views are also unparalleled. It's a beautiful, quiet, calm place to rest and relax. They've really tried to make the best of the surrounding environment, and that's so appreciated in a country where development is coming rapidly, but at what environmental cost? If you want a respite on the northern route, or a relaxed place to use as a base for hiking, it's a great option.

I have visited Befikir Ecology Lodge with some friends in October 2012, on a trip to the Northern part of Ethiopia. I loved it!!
The lodge is located just by a mountain cliff on the way to Gondar which gives amazing panoramas for sunsets and the Ethiopian mountains. Early morning walks are amazing, as you enter in contact with the surrounding nature and spirit. The lodge is new and it has been created by a local Ethiopian who (as he explained to us) wishes to let tourists meet the real / not touristy side of Ethiopia whilst helping the local communities to build a sustainable way of working without distroying their natural surroundings.

During our stay rooms were clean, the bathroom facilities were very good, each room has its own boiler so we always had hot water. Each room is an individual house, which gives a lot of privacy. Admittedly, the rooms dont have heating (it is an ecology lodge after all!!), so you need to be prepared with warm clothes. Nevertheless, we loved the evenings spent with the owner and the people working there by the fireplace whilst having a proper coffee ceremony and enjoying the local foods.

As you may expect, the food choice for dinner and breakfast are not like in a normal hotel as everything is sourced locally; however we loved the just-made pancakes with Simiens honey (delish!), the home made vegetable soup and the tender lamb stew. Also, the owner would provide to us a very nice packed meal for lunch for our trip to the Simiens mountains (way better than the expensive sandwiches that we were given on the first day by another hotel in the Simiens!!) and also advised us on a nice walk in the valley below to see wild life, helped by a local scout.

I would definitely recommend it. I think also that this is the type of spirit that a traveller to Ethiopia wishes to find :)

This is a facility with tukul-style lodging at the edge of the Simien mountains at 9,000 feet. There is a main lodge/dining room/gathering place and several single story tukuls for guests to sleep in. It appears from the outside that lodging consists of one tukul for each family or guest, however the tukuls are acutally divided in half on the inside by a permanent wall so the accomodations are actually quite cramped, small even for just one person and they are sparsely furnished. Each room has an attached tiny bathroom consisting of a sink, toilet and shower head sticking out of the corner - no shower curtain. The entire bathroom is soaked during your shower. The hot water heater provided me a 3 minute hot shower and water pressure was lacking. Bedding was warm enough for the cold nights, but my husband and daughter woke up both mornings with bug bites - and we hadn't seen a single mosquito. During the day there isn't anything to do but go trekking and there is hiking for all levels of ability. We paid for an armed escort to guide us and protect us from wildlife during our hike. We did see a troop of baboons - our escort trained his rifle until the alpha male stood down. It was a beautiful 3-hour trek that we took our 4yo daughter along on; our escort was patient and did not hurry her. We also met lots of locals and friendly shepherds that let her pet the lambs. In the evenings the sunsets are very pretty - in fact the landscape is just gorgeous to look at and the sunsets emphasize it. Dinners at the lodge were good, however the menu is limited and does not change from day to day. Lentil soup, cream of lentil soup, roast beef, pasta, fried fish, or injera with shiro. I had cream of lentil soup and fried fish both nights and was quite satisfied. Every evening the staff performs a traditional coffee ceremony and lights a fire in the fireplace. Unfortunately the chimney doesn't capture all the smoke and the lodge is quickly filled with it. For some reason unknown to staff, there was no electricity (thus no hot shower and no lights) for the first 24 hours we were there. The main lodge has a generator but it does not supply the guest rooms. That first night really felt like camping. While staff was nice, and so was the nature and trekking experience, the accommodations really did not meet our expectations. Another annoying detail was the menu prices were not communicated until we checked out and were surprised with the amount on the bill. Not outrageous, but again, not what we expected. In the end, Befiker Kossoye Eco Lodge was more like a camping experience and if that's what you're after, you will be satisfied.
