We rang and confirmed one double room in the "old" building for 379 birr per night, private bathroom, wifi, tv and one breakfast included. We arrived to be told that we had apparently booked four doubles in the new building at 721 birr per night. When we disputed the point, the man at reception said that there were no vacant rooms in the old building. We stated that there must be a room as we had booked one, and suddenly one was available for us!
Not the best start to our stay, for sure, but after this we can honestly say that our time at the Quara was quite fine. Our room was quite dark, but the lights worked. The bed was comfortable enough (although we did end up buying some bug spray as we found a couple of small bugs), tv worked and wifi was great. The bathroom was clean, hot water worked, although our toilet seat and lid unfortunately was broken. There was a bit of a problem with keys to the room - we seemed to be always chasing up a cleaner to be able to get back into our room regardless of when we arrived back at the hotel!
We didn't bother with the breakfast - we had a look at the Quara's menu, given that only one breakfast was free, but it appeared a little overpriced. We ended up having breakfast out every day - there are some great little cafes around the place! Nevertheless, we did have lunch twice and dinner once at the Quara and the food was good, the service very good. The view is fantastic at any time of the day, but at night it was particularly enjoyable.
The hotel is in a good position and we were able to explore much of Gondar on foot which was great. It's unfortunate that we had a few too many little problems to not feel it justified a better rating, but we would still recommend it to others as a good base in Gondar.
