We stayed 3 nights at Motel Yedjele Beach while on Mare. The high point was the beautiful setting, just right across the lane from beautiful Yedjele Beach and lagoon, one of the nicest spots on the island. However the finishing touches were lacking, but we had a really nice stay there anyway.
The first problem was upon arrival. We arrived at night and the place isn’t signposted so we would’ve had some trouble finding it if it weren’t for a friendly local helping out. Next they said that they hadn’t received our booking (we booked through caledoniaspirit.com) but luckily they still had 1 bungalow available for our use. We had to wait 30min or so while they went out and cleaned it up, changed sheets, etc. There were 2 single beds rather than our requested double or queen. We attempted to push the beds together but there was still an uncomfortable gap between the metal frames.
The bungalow itself was nice enough – fairly new, bright, airy, with an upstairs loft that could sleep lots of kids. It had a small kitchenette with fridge, hotplate, and an assortment of dishes, but no electric jug or microwave. Also there were no sponges, dishtowels, soap, rubbish bins, or anything like that provided. And there was an ant problem, so anything edible had to be stored in the fridge. The veranda was nice with awesome views right out to the beach and lagoon but it disappointingly lacked any furniture. A couple of plastic chairs and table would have been nice.
There are almost no restaurants around. One night we drove to the nearby Nengone Hotel and had a good dinner there. The rest of the time it was self-catering. There is a reasonable supermarket in the main town, Tadine, about 15min drive away. A rental car is essential for exploring the island.
We had lots of problem with the gas hot water in the shower. After a few minutes of use, it for some reason shut off and you had to go outside behind the bungalow to get it started back up again. My wife and I took turns doing this for each others’ showers. There was no lock on the door, and although highly unlikely that anything would be stolen, we would’ve preferred the peace of mind knowing that our belongings were secure while we were out and about all day. There was no daily cleaning service at all during our stay.
Although we had a pleasant few days, we felt that the ~US$100/night price tag was too high and not good value. Yes, we would recommend it to other travelers, but you just have to keep in mind that this is budget accommodation and don’t expect luxury.
