We stayed at White Grass Ocean Resort on Tanna in July, 2013 for three nights. It is an attractive boutique resort in a fabulous location, only 5 minutes from the airport on Tanna. The views over the ocean from the restaurant are wonderful, and you can sit outside and have a drink or read and soak up the sunset.
Our room was attractive and comfortable, with a full mosquito net over the bed. There was a bar fridge in the room.
The breakfasts were adequate. Dinners were adequate, without being anything special. We did not eat lunch at the resort as there was not much offered in the way of light meals, such as sandwiches. We bought nuts from the bar, and made it through to dinner time. There is not really anywhere else to eat. There is another small resort next door which had a restaurant, which we would have tried if we had been staying longer. Don't order sparkling wine, as this did not seem to survive the trip to the tropics very well. The management apologetically replaced ours when we complained.
The resort is a 5-10 minute walk from two wonderful blue holes. Along with the trip to the volcano, these were the highlight of our trip to Vanuatu. Do not miss these if you are a snorkeler. They are like huge, very deep rock pools, full of collapsed caves and archways, and containing mini coral reefs and masses of brilliant fish.
The resort offers free guided boat tours and swims out beyond the reef to see the turtles, although these did not go due to rough weather when we were there. The resort guide took us to snorkel a blue hole instead. We did take a boat trip to the blue cave, which is not for the claustrophobic, as you have to dive under water to get to the entrance to the cave. It was low tide when we went, and the entrance was exposed, but the sea was quite choppy and some may still find this entry a daunting one. The boat ride, however, was most enjoyable.
The staff are friendly and helpful and organise tours and activities. They organised our volcano tour and the guide was both knowledgeable and responsible. We saw many other groups there who did not have proper guides, or whose "guides" did not offer much guidance with regard to safety. Our guide watched the volcano like a hawk, and only allowed us to go where she said, when she said.
The resort provides work for the nearby villages and there was a good feel to the relationship between them.
There are only 12 cabins, so book early.
