“Malo River Blue Hole is Great !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2012

This Blue Hole is not North of Luganville, it is on Malo Island which is behind Aore Island south of Luganville. It is easily accessible from Luganville, Aore Island, Ratua Island or Bokissa Island, and most of these Hotels drop you off at a small beach on the riverbank on Malo Island. Then you hop in a canoe, and it is an easy 20 minute row to a big Lagoon, and a further 5 minutes to the Blue Hole. The row down the river is fantastic, it is very shallow and so crystal clear you can see heaps of fish, and almost eerily quiet and peaceful. There is no mistaking the dramatic change in water colour from Crystal Clear to Turquoise Blue when we reached the Blue Hole, so we jumped in for a quick swim. Hint - Bring your insect repellant for this trip ! Then it's an easy row / paddle back down the river to the waiting boats.

Even in a downpour this place is great. The water has almost a silky feel and we didnt mind getting wet in and out!

“Great to visit.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2012

There are numerous blue holes all up and down the east coast. Some of them are tricky to find but a guide can take you there if you wish.

They really are blue and well worth a visit and a swim.

“Some Blue Holes”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2012

Santo has at least 4 Blue Holes - we visited 2 of them, Lope Lope and another both set in the jungle. These are small lakes formed by the erosion caused by springs - quite deep and intensely blue water even though its also very clear when you are in it - the cause of the colour is most likely the dissolved limestone content.

There is a small fee to visit these sites - this is included in the tour cost if going with a guide. We did a tour with Paradise Tours that included 2 Blue Holes and some of the northern beaches including Champaign Beach - excellent.

The water is very refreshing. Quite a few fresh water fish inhabit them too.

Photographer Warning: There would appear to be something in the water that reacts with parts of Olympus waterproof cameras - the black facing of my camera peeled off, the lens trim became detached, and water found its way in after a fairly short immersion (was quite waterproof up until then).
