“The perfect place to dream the day away”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

I live on the main island of Vava'u and small though it is every now and you need to take a time out and replenish the batteries and just chill out. This is usually in the quieter season and a few friends head for Mafana Island. Here you do not have to get out of bed if you don't feel like it but if you don't get out of bed you might miss some of the most glorious sunrises.

Lunch time can be any time of the day. Or you can have another icy cold drink and just think about lunch. That is what Mafana Island is all about. Time doesn't exist in this serene peaceful corner of paradise.

For those who like to explore there is always an early morning swim around the island, or kayaks and of course some great snorkelling. Behan your host will always help to clean fish or husk a coconut for the cool coconut water or show you how to shred a coconut to have with your dinner. He also lights a great BBQ in the evenings.

The fales are clean and comfortable and the cook tent has produced some great meals. This is one destination for each person to create their dream holiday or getaway.

Awesome place to stay to get away from it all, Behan made us feel really welcome and nothing was ever too much trouble for him. Everything was set up so even though it was basic, you have everything there. The fales were beautiful.

Had a great time here…… 3 nights was not enough!!!
Absolutely beautiful part of the world.
Not the sort of place to go if you demand a hot shower as there is no electricity but it has all you need and more.
Our only requirement/difficulty was keeping the esky full with ice which wasn’t difficult…. Just meant we had to head back into town mid trip to re stock.
Awesome place and Behan is a good bloke also……..

Recently went on a 4 week vacation throughout the Pacific, Tonga, Fiji and Vanuatu. I would say the highlight of my entire trip was staying at Mafana Island, relaxing and exploring the nearby islands. Behan supplied me with camping equipment and dropped me off on a nearby deserted island where I camped out for 2 days and nights, an unforgettable experience! When it was over I was super happy to get back to the comfortable beach fale and outdoor kitchen of the Mafana Island Camp. Also took a day trip to Fetoko island and went on a motorized kayak tour of the reef...a must do in my opinion!
What a great time and what a great host. I highly recommend Mafana Island to anyone who visits Vava’u, Tonga.

May still being the quiet time in Tonga gave us the opportunity to have this island all to ourselves. If you want to do something of the beaten path this is the place for you!! The accommodation only allows for 8 people on the island at a time so book ahead. This is not a resort and is self catering with basic toilet and shower facilities. So if your into camping and like doing something different you will love this place. Self catering is easy just make sure to grab everything from town before you go. Behan the owner was super helpful, making sure we had everything we needed before we headed to the island. I made the booking before we left and he emailed me with a map of Neiafu, and places to shop for food with good local knowledge. The second story bamboo huts are amazing and gave us great views. Behan took us on a snorkeling tour and a walk to the most eastern island. In low tide you can walk to a near by island. The fishing is excellent and added to our menu:)
Thanks Behan for the fantastic memories!!

I was there late August 2011 for 2 weeks and thought the place was amasing. It's not for the faint hearted mind but even those people pull through it and end up transformed :) this place is a mile away from your power shower and lip gloss and for that reason its the best place I've been. The locals are fantastic. I

Room Tip: Choose the closest tent to the sea as you get there quicker :)

Mafana Island backpackers is not a luxury resort. It's a very small beach with some inventively designed cabins, a 'basic' toilet and an open air kitchen. If you want to forget about time, listen to the waves, and wander around a small island, its all good. If you want something more, go somewhere else, Behan is a great host, nothing is too much trouble, and the conversation will be good. We hit a few windy days which made cooking a bit of a mission, but with no deadlines, what's the hurry? A walk around most of the island at low tide is an education in different beach eco-systems. There some coral just of there resort beach, and one day we had the entire island to ourselves. It's that kind of place. But you have to be up for it.

Room Tip: The cabin to the right as you hit the beach gets a tad more sun.
