“Worst place ever stayed!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2013

We were told to go to Fifita's as its affordable and gives a chance to experience true Tongan Island life. The lady told us she was full and only had the most expensive room left. Cost, $75. the room was dark, dirty (we asked her to clean an extra time, but the concept of clean was vague), full of cobwebs and small spiders.

We agreed to stay and headed to Mariners to celibrate our arrival at Ha' apai. When we returned we found a MASSIVE SPIDER on the wall. Serious, this was not one you pick up and swoop out. I emptied a can of mortein on it. I sometimes still see it crawling over our pillow towarths us. Thank god we had a mosquito net in the room, it gave us a small sense of safety.

the bed appeared to be rock hard, also not level, my girlfriend kept bumping on to me. At five in the morning our upstairs neighbours started to jump around their room (some family with kids living there) and kept us awake for the rest of the night.

Next morning we didn't even bother to get breakfast. This place was to dirty to even think of food. We payed the lady $50 dollar and checked out. The place wasn't full, there was no one there. And I understand why... the rest of our stay in Ha' apai was awesome. And honoustly? Our stay at Fifita Is unforgettable.

This guesthouse is showing its age but there are so few budget guesthouses on the island there is little to complain about. We stayed for quite a few nights and spent our days diving whale swimming and just looking around the islands. It isn't the cleanest place in the world and the bathrooms need a major overhaul. If you just need a basic room for a few nights while you do other things then I would recommend. If you want a relaxing island location t stay at I'd look outside of town at some of the basic beach resorts on the other islands. Keep in mind that the real expense in tonga is the food. unless you can survive on instant noodles everyday having nice meals will cost much more than your rooms:-0

It's cheap, it's a Ha'apai institution, it's a genuine Tongan experience. It's not 5 star accommodation, more like a hostel. It's not quiet. But you get to look at pigs and chickens wandering around, listen to children playing and doing their chores, and you are in the centre of town. It's right above Mariner's Cafe where you get wireless and great food, so that is why I say it is the best of both worlds... guests have a genuine Tongan experience only a few steps away from a glass of wine, wireless internet and delicious food. I wouldn't stay anywhere else.

It's a nice place right in the "center" of Pangai. The room was clean and very basic. Breakfast was included in the price consisting of toasts, butter, jam and coffee or tea. It is close to the wharf, liqueur store, groceries and local bbq place. Right bellow the guesthouse, there is the only cafe/bar (Mariner's cafe) in Pangai.

Unlike other establishments on Ha'apai, Fifita's do answer the phone, which is why we ended up booking here, despite some of these reviews. We booked a $50 double with no bathroom and a pick up from the airport. We were picked up promptly, if a little ungraciously - "weren't there supposed to be 3 of you?" (No). On arrival we were shown a $75 ensuite, which we rejected. Then an airless $65 double and finally the $50 room we thought we had booked all along. The bed was rock hard - a bed base in fact. Cooking facilities were basic - one pan. The Fijian water engineers who were staying warned us not to even use the tap water for teeth cleaning. The final straw was not having a piece of left-behind property returned to us. A disappointing stay that will not be repeated.

Room Tip: Test the "mattress."

Fifita was a warm and welcoming lady and her staff were very helpful and attentive. The deluxe rooms were disappointing. The bed was rock hard, there was no air flow and no fan in the room and you could hear every word or snore from next door. It got so bad that we ended up sleeping in the living room where the windows weren't blocked up and we could have a breeze. We drowned our sorrows at Mariners Cafe which was excellent for food and drinks. A few little fixes and Fifita would have an excellent guest house. A work in progress...

Room Tip: The upstairs rooms might be cooler.

Accommodation is very basic but comfortable and provides a great base for exploring the beautiful beaches of Lifuka and beyond. Having looked at a few of the other guesthouses on the island, Fifita's won when weighing up the location, value and standard.

It's right above the Mariner's Cafe (a great place to eat and drink as well as hire bikes and snorkel gear) and very handy for everything else in the small town of Pangai.

Rates were reasonable and a simple bread and jam breakfast is included.

The number we tried from the Tonga tourism website was never answered so
we arrived on the island without any reservations but were fine in getting a room.
