I have been meaning to write this and regret I have neglected to do so earlier.
The best guide ever is Richard Coke. He was simply the most charming and patient person, the best teacher, an outstanding scout, a solid driver, and an amazing philosopher that one could ever dream to have as a guide.
Mombo Camp was terrific. too. Simply extraordinary how they can keep such a high standard when they are so remotely situated. The beds and rooms are true safari interior design. Spotlessly clean and luxe beds, pillows and linen. Two sinks, two showers - inside and outside.
Like all camps we visited, one is walked to and from the room on the elevated walkway at sunset or sunrise on and when there are animals under/near it.
Unlike some camps where one has to drive a long way to get to the animals over very bumpy sandy roads, Mombo's animals seem to be just around the corner from the Camp itself.
One lunch time someone shouted "Lion kill". We dropped our forks and plates, ran for the vehicle and Richard said "Hang on"! Four of us had the ride of our lives to see a lion attack a buffalo. It was hilarious and exhilarating as we slid and skidded around the corners We all totally trusted Richard's skill and knowledge.
He is a quiet, charming and a fascinating person. We would ask for him to be our guide in a heart beat if we returned to Africa.
We later figured out why Mombo is one of the top Botswana camps. It has top geography, top and plentiful animals of all species, top guides and top prices. It was worth every penny.
It is so popular - book at least a year ahead. Do not miss it. Simply sensational in all ways!
