“Incredible safari and value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2013

We were there for only 2 nights (tents 7,8 and 9) but that time was the best of our entire trip across Botswana and SA. Without duplicating the other great reviews, we wanted to add that we researched the Wilderness and Beyond safari packages which were much more expensive and, while we have never gone to them, there is just no way we can imagine anything better than Machaba. Special thanks to Kyle, Marlene for the incredible service, and to Kashanga ("Leopard") for the thrilling safari drives, and to Chris for using his 16 years experience in putting together a magical place.

My family and I stayed in Machaba camp when coming to Botswana on our holiday. We were welcomed by a nice drink and all the staff were singing as we drove in. The main area was really lovely with camping outdoor chairs facing the river and the elephants grazing and swimming. The tents were soo good with comfortable beds and the camp is in a fabulous location. We had a wonderful guide and we learnt so much. We had never seen a wild dog before and we were wishing upon our arrival that we would see at least one. Well, thanks to our wonderful guide, we saw wild dogs about 10 mins into our first safari! Then, we saw a kill and lions every other game drive we went on and wild dogs at least once per day! The game was wonderful and the Camp was even better! The Food was lovely and the best part of the night would always be eating dinner and then they would come and put hot coals under your seat! It was deliciously warm! We loved our stay and are definetly hoping to go back in the future.

We (3 adults, 3 kids) recently returned from a fantastic 3 day stay at Machaba. Upon arrival in Machaba we were greeted by the entire staff, had a quick drink in the beautiful main lodge and shown to our great tents that were big, superbly appointed, light and airy and immediately thought that this was exactly what we had dreamed of in a tent safari in terms of accomodations. From there on things just got better; staff was excellent both very friendly and very professional with everyone including camp managers Elke and Sean making us feel right at home. The location of the camp is great, right on the Khwai river giving us daily views of hippos, elephants, crocs and lots of impalas, waterbucks etc. right outside our front door (or rather tent flap).

The camp is non-fenced and wildlife is literally coming into camp which is an extra bonus although it means that you can't go out at night without escort.. a small price to pay.

Food was exquisite and the standard of service very high. The evenings were magical with the traditional pre-dinner cocktains and after-dinner camp fire coziness enhanced by oil lanterns hung in the big tree outside the central tent. We were lucky to have the camp all for ourselves the first day and very lightly occupied the rest of our stay.

As good as the lodgings were, the best part was still the game drives. We came from another camp (Sawuti) in the Chobe national park where we had had close encounters with lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant etc. and frankly doubted that any camp could match that wildlife experience. Our guide at Machaba, Simon, set the bar high by saying that Machaba would be better than everything else we had seen previously and to our delight and surprise, he was spot on.

In the very first game drive he located a leopard feeding in a tree that we watched for a good half hour. He then drove us right into the middle of a pride of lions feeding on a buffalo carcass and finally, on the way home we saw hyena and a hippo out of the water. From there on things got even better; the following day, we spent nearly an hour with the same pride of lions and had two big males coming within meters of the truck, saw younger males playfighting and several lionesses lazing around. The culmination, however, was the evening drive on our second day where we followed a pack of wild dogs on the hunt for an hour, lost them for the actual kill but caught up with them just a minute or two after where we saw them having a stand-off with a crocodile that came up from the river to steal the kill, as we were watching that, a leopard came in but got chased away by the dogs so we now had dogs, croc and leopard all at the same time, all within meters of the truck. As if this wasn't enough, another dog had separated from the pack and now chased another impala into the river about 100 yds from us, killed it and in the process irritated a hippo that came halfway out of the water, mouth open while the dog was frantically trying to retrieve his kill. We drove over there (leaving the leopard and the other dogs) saw him tearing into the kill and after 10 minutes returned to the previous scene where we saw the leopard coming down from the tree only to get chased back up by the dogs two times. Finally, the dogs went home and the leopard came down and hauled the scraps up in a nearby tree. This was, needless to say, an experience of a lifetime and in itself worth the whole trip. For the last day we asked for zebra and hyena and Simon, again, delivered.

All in all, this was the ultimate safari experience with a perfect combination of a beautiful and luxurious camp, friendly and professional staff and unbeatable game viewing. Thanks to everyone at camp Machaba for the best possible finale to our two week trip.

Mutschaba is the newest and best lodge in the Khwai region . Absolutely perfect in all aspects, the rooms are facing the Khwai rive and we did see lot's of elephants and other game grazing and bathing i9n the river - unbelievable safaris and unforgettable bird life . Excellent food , amazing staff and outstanding personal care of the female lodge manager.
A never regret move - and still enjoy real Africa in all safety and comfort.

This camp is a 'must-do'. Absolutely fantastic!!! All small details were taken care of. Excellent food and drinks at the campfire. Elephants drinking and swimming just outside your tent. Great game drives: wild dogs (with puppies), leopards, hyena's (with cubs), elephants, giraffes, ostriches, zebra's, hippo's, crocs, buffalo's, lots of birds, too much to mention!!! Thanks Sean, Elke and your team for this great time we had at the Khwai River. The Wulff-family

Room Tip: All rooms had a river view.

beautiful setting overlooking a river with wild game there most of the time. The tents are decorated beautifully, subtlely. Very comfortable beds. Hot water bottles offered at night if needed. You can rest midday, between safari options, in comfortable overstuffed chairs and look out at the river, private, quiet. Food is excellent, cooked onsight, and served family style outside overlooking the river.

Guides are knowlegeable, two outings offered per day. Option of river trip or jeep.
Behind the scenes, they have state of the art energy production, working towards green management.

Hosts are attentive, respectful, warm and caring. They attend to many details that make a fine trip.

Room Tip: All tents, with VERY comfortable beds, blankets, seating. Farther from main area may be quieter, bu...
