“Authentic bush experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2012

Khwai tented camp is the genuine authentic bush experience. The camp does get set up in a different location every 6 days, so we stayed in 2 different locations, both beautiful. They are moving to a permanant location very shortly. Pilot and the entire staff are very nice and want to do everything they can to make this the best experience possible. They will also take you to the village of Khwai and explain and show you the village way of life. Not fancy, not well thought out.

The transfer from the Khwai airstrip into camp is a fabulous safari game drive in itself. We saw impala, hippos, elephants, Cape buffalo, baboons, lions and others. The staff sang as we approached, and then made us feel welcome. Since we had children, they accommodated us by having meals early and even let us dictate what time we'd like to leave for game drives. Pilot is very knowledgeable and funny.

This basic-with-amenties camp has been situated under a grove of acacias for quite some time and does NOT move every few days (as another person reported). Elephants would wander near camp, push on the acacia trunks and then eat the dropped pods. At night after we had been zipped into our tents, we would lie in bed under down comforters and listen to the sounds of the night -- elephants lumbering through camp, roaring lions and cackling hyenas. A couple hyenas slipped into the kitchen tent one night and there was flour strewn around camp the next morning -- cook called them 'lazy hunters'.

The night drive was a highlight as Pilot drove, navigated, held the spotlight, and commented simultaneously. We saw hippos, an African wildcat, spring hares and more.

Meals are cooked over an open fire and are quite good. Cook made fresh bread for every meal.
We tried impala one night, and kudu another. She had fresh vegetables and fruits from which to choose.

Showers are another adventure. Water is heated on the fire and brought to the back of your tent at the appointed hour, and poured into the hanging vinyl bucket. You turn on the spigot and get wet, then turn it off and soap up. Then turn on the spigot to rinse off. What a delight! There were also flush toilets and a staff member would fill the outside toilet bucket every day.

Visiting Khwai Village to see residents weaving baskets, traditional houses and a bushman's stick hut was interesting.

Khwai Tented Camp is a really specially place to stay. It is not the most luxurious camp in the Delta - but that would be difficult as they have to relocate every 6 nights. It's a small intimate camp, with all the essentials, and a wonderful staff. Pilot the manager/guide is a real gem - he manages the camp, trains the staff and runs all the activities, including game drives, night drives and walks. He has a wonderful sense of humour and a tracking ability second to none. We watched and followed a leopard for over an hour on the first evening - with Pilot driving off road through the bush (over bushes etc), spotting with a light with one hand, driving with the other, with his head out of the vehicle following tracks at the same time - magic! I had 4 nights at the camp and wished I could stay longer. If your reason for visiting is to spend time watching/photographing wildlife you will not be disappointed.

We had an incredible time in this camp.
We stayed here fot 2 nights after staying in an other camp from African Bushcamps, called Linyanti bush camp.
This camp is more basic. Only 4 tents and smaller than the tents in Linyanti.
Lovely bucketshowers and good food.
Fantastic guide, called Pilot, took us around for two days and we loved it.
The staff tries everything to make you happy. Well we were happy from the first minute to the last one!!
The way to get there is by small plane which is of course an adventure itself.
