We booked a 3 day, 2 night package with Backpacker tours, transport by Jeep. Everything was fantastic- great guide (English/Spanish/German speaking), good food, and a customized tour thanks to Eric (owner). The area is beautiful, with rolling plains, waterfalls (cold but not too cold to swim), and lovely people.
I would love to go back and do the Roraima trek (6 days, people rave about it).
It is a bit of a trek to get to though- we flew from Caracas to Puerto Ordaz, then caught an overnight bus to Santa Elena, where we started the tour in the morning. If you are not fluent in Spanish you should give yourself more buffer time- getting a bus to Santa Elena was tricky because they only sell tickets the day of the journey, and you have to buy in person at the station. Get to the Puerto Ordaz terminal (NOT San Felix terminal) early the morning of travel. We were sold fake tickets and had to argue our way into a bus by talking to the company boss, as well as the terminal manager. And we had a local friend, a lawyer, who did all the talking. We would have been in a tricky situation otherwise! But don't let this deter you- just remember, this is Venezuela, something will probably go wrong- and go enjoy this lovely region of the country.
Don't forget long sleeved clothing and lots of repellent- The sandflies are unrelenting!
