“Nice trip, but lines can be long and there are mechanical issues.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2013

The tereferico offers great views on your way to the top of the Avila - and one way to get there without having to climb the mountain. The Avila is great - again, beautiful views (when it's not cloudy), good food, some shops. The Avila is crowded during peak times (like the weekend) and can have mechanical problems, especially in the years since the government took it over. Always double check it's open before heading out in Caracas traffic to get there. Remember the Avila is high up, so the temps are cooler. Nice in the summer, especially, but you might need a sweater or jacket up there, esp. in the winter.

“A ride to the top of the avila mountain”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

Developed during the military dictatorship together with the humboldt hotel, the cable car takes you up to the top of the iconic avila mountain, where you can enjoy a spectacular view from the city and the Caribbean ocean. Around the station there are food options, but the best way to enjoy the trip is to take a jeep to the mountain town of San Jose de galipan, where you can eat in five star restaurants (many require previous reservation) while watching the sunset, ride a horse and eat strawberrys with cream or hot chocolate. Ideal for couples, friends or family with children, the visit is a great plan for a weekend day, just remember to bring a jacket or sweater, cash and arrive early to avoid long lines and enjoy the full day.

The teleferico is great, with marvellous views of Caracas and the Caribbean when you get to the top. But there can be long queues at weekends and holidays,

“Caracas main atraction”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

Its the main atraction for the local people and for tourists. There are nice views from the city up there and the other side to the sea. Go early in the morning to avoid long lines and to catch the best view, due to less clouds on both sides.
There is an ice scating place up there too which was reopened.
Calculate a few hours for the whole trip.
Once up there you can walk down to the small village of Galipan ( or you can take 4x4 trucks who will ride you down, you can find some nice restaurants there were to have a nice meal with view to the sea. Ask the drivers for some places.
Or just have a " sándwich de pernil " (pork sándwich) which is the speciality there.
The Hotel though unfortunately is still closed since 40 years now . Its a real pitty.
