“Not for anyone with even slight mobility problems”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2014

This has been a lovely hotel in its hayday, but sadly it is looking very tired now, and for the price we paid, it really needs to be refurbished. There are a lot of stairs in this hotel, which we knew before booking it, but what we didnt know was that for 2 of our 4 day stay, only one of the 4 lifts would be working. This in its self made life very difficult for me as I have a knee problem.
Our first couple of days at the hotel were truthfully quite lovely. The hotel was not full so the pools were realatively quiet, the restaurants were easy to get into and it was a pleasure being there. I have to say that the staff are execitonal. I did not meet one member of staff. apart from a manager, who did not give us anything except outstanding customer service.
Things went a bit astray on our 3rd day. There is a ferryboat taxi service which runs all day to the small town accross the bay. There is a berth at the hotel which is manned by hotel staff and if you have mobility issues, a golf cart will take you down there. What they dont explain is the difficullty you will have disembarking at the other side. I had a very bad fall getting out of the boat and had to return to the hotel. I damaged my knee and my leg and tore my clothing. The hotel consierge was wonderful and got me some ice, and I think more to cover the hotels liability than anything else, insisted that they would send the hotel doctor to see me, even though we didnt want him to come! Ice packs and pain killers, well, I kind of knew that!
What we were dissapointed in was the attitude of the hotel management when we went to see them the next day. They refused to even accept that the hotel had any duty of care to their patrons, even though they arrange for the boat taxi service and help you into the boat. We were asking that they make it known to quests with mobility issues before they get onto the boat that they may have issues at the other end, but we just got this smarmy guys telling us that we werent in the US anymore and US law didnt apply. Didnt even take the time to see that we were Canadian, not that it really matters. Bottom line is if you run into problems, dont expect them to help you!
The hotel got very busy on the sunday as there were 2 seperate holiday tours came in, and the whole atmosphere changed. They were both on an inclusive package and were making the most of the free drinks! Pool was too noisy to sit at and enjoy and the resturants became very busy. You couldnt get a chair near the pool anywhere as they were all being used by the time we got there. There were also a large number of Mexicans using the hotel so it was very busy. Unfotunately we also made the mistake of waiting till the last night to try the terace restaurat, only to discover that it, and most of the other restaurants were closed on a monday as they do an Mexican Fiesta night on the grass beside the marina. This was a lot of fun with great food and a Mariachati band, but it might have been helpful to know this in advance so we could have used the restaurant on another night. Other problem was that we got bitten to death by the buggs in the grass!
If I was with a golf tour, I would go back here, as the golf looked fabulous, but as a couple on our own, no we will not be going back here. There are too many way better places to spend our money!

Room Tip: Ask for a room higher up so you get a view.

I just got back from a weeklong all-inclusive golf vacation. We couldn't have been happier with the accommodations, the food, the grounds and the golf! The most outstanding thing was the staff. They spoiled and pampered us day and night and I so appreciated everything they did to make it an enjoyable stay. From Leonel, the restaurant manager, who made sure our preferences were available at every meal, to Eau, who cleaned our room and returned for nightly turn-down, to Gabriel the recreation director and tennis instructor, everyone was so friendly and helpful. The caddies at the golf course were so patient and improved play so much that I'm afraid my handicaps too low. Thank you for a wonderful visit and I hope to return there soon.

Room Tip: Rooms on the 6th floor are definitely the most convenient since it's on the same floor as the lo...

We spent one week golfing and enjoying the incredibly lovely resort here. With views over the water and the marina plus beach this location can't be beat. The rooms were spacious, well equipped and beautifully furnished. Food was ample with a nice selection of dishes, well displayed. The boat trip to the small nearby town was fun.....already planning to go back. The staff, one and all, were accommodating and friendly and very well trained.

Room Tip: upper floors have better views and if you can upgrade to a suite they are luxurious and very spaciou...

We stayed 2 nights at this hotel and was very impressed with the Staff and Food. Where it falls down is in the maintenance. The Old World Rich fixtures were symbolic of the hotel in its prime. However, lack of detail in daily cleaning has diminished the fixtures into somewhat dirty relics of the past. This is in stark contrast to the people who work there as they were exceptional in attitude and efficiency. I would suggest the management walk each room and look at the fixtures and the shower stalls. Ours were dirty and the shower did not drain properly so you were standing in water as you dried your body. I cannot rate the hotel separate from its staff so I would rate the staff at above excellent and the hotel as slightly above average.
We will stay there again and hope the detail care has raised the quality as this should be 5 Star!

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the marina offer outstanding views!

We would also like to thank you for your valuable comments regarding the areas where we can improve, be sure that your feedback will help us to offer a better experience to our guests. We are totally aware about the opportunity areas we have in some fixtures in the rooms. It is important to mention we start to work with some positives changes inside the rooms and definitely we want to keep working on these details to reach the optimum fixtures level. The shower drain was of course fixed and we are programing a preventive maintenance to prevent this situations.

We would like you can afford us another opportunity to regain your trust and looking forward to personally welcome you on your next visit”.

We are a couple in our 30's - no children. We picked this resort based on Trip Advisor reviews from others that said the food here was good. We had the All Inclusive package for 10 days. If you are not on the All Inclusive plan I would suggest eating the majority of your meals across the water at Barra de Navidad as the menu prices at the hotel are fairly steep. I tried to post a few foodie photos as there are not many on here. All in all we enjoyed our stay and would return.

Food Options

Breakfast Grand Cafe Buffet 6am-Noon
Lunch buffet at pool "La Plazuela" Noon-6pm -great salsa!
Snack Menu Noon-6pm- fish tacos were our favorite
Dinner Grand Café Buffet 6pm-11pm, Antonios a la carte 6pm-Midnight, or La Terraza a la carte 6pm-Midnight
Mini bar replenished once a day - beer, pop & water
Domestic & Select alcoholic beverages from 11am-Midnight

Grand Café Breakfast Food

Bagels, pastries, cereal, cheese, manned omelet station, potatoes, bacon, ham, yogurt, French toast, pancakes, waffles, sausage, lots of fresh pineapple, mango, honeydew melon, watermelon, juice bar. All good quality, fresh and they never ran out of anything during our 10 day stay.
You can sit out on the patio or inside. There's always lots of seating. Waiters bring coffee, water and clear the tables. We tipped 1-2$ when coffee was served. The bill says the breakfast buffet is $19.50 USD.

Snack Menu

Fish Tacos! We loved these, had them 6 times!
Turkey sandwich - ask for mayo/sauce on the side otherwise it's very runny
Tuna sandwich just regular tuna salad - not great bread
Pizza - good. Ask for it extra crispy. Personal size
French fries must be McDonalds - they taste exactly the same!
Hamburger not the best
Veggie Panini was soggy
Hot Dog - we didn't try

Pool Lunch Buffet

BarBQ different meat selections
Lots of salad bar options
Seafood
Dessert bar - great Ice cream - mango, coconut, strawberry & chocolate

A la Cartes

La Terraza was ok. The ambience is nice. You're outside with a beautiful view. Live music every night. The service is good. The food selection is limited, equal quality as the Buffett and there are bugs on the patio! If we ever come back we won't waste our a la cartes there. This is the only a la carte option for families though.

Antonio's was fantastic. Adult only. The intimate dinning room is beautiful. The service is nice and the food presentation is perfect. There was a single red rose on every table each night as well as a single red candle. They bring fresh silverware for each course. From seating to bill it's a 90-120 minute outing. If you are on the all inclusive plan you can pick 2 starters/salads/soup, 1 main dish and 1 dessert. The village salad is great. Also the shrimp main dish is tasty.

Our "bills" at the a la cartes (for 2) ranged from $190-$280USD. Though all 4 times we ate at a la cartes we were charged for things we didn't order and for multiples of things we only had one of. One night we were "charged" for 9 glasses of wine even though we only had 2. If you are tipping on the total bill make sure your bill is correct. We enjoyed Antonio's 2/3 times we went. We went on Valentines Day night and we were a disappointed with a few of the courses. We assume the kitchen was overly busy. They have a dress code of long pants/shoes for men.

Tips/Rules/How To's

Make reservations same day from 10am-3pm for a la cartes.
We stayed 10 days we were allowed 4 a la cartes.
The water taxi is $2 USD or 20 pesos return. You pay when you get to Barra and they give you a ticket to hold onto for your return trip.
Sign out pool towels at the main pool. Return by 6pm.
Front desk has a maximum $300US per room currency exchange.
If you can't get on the wifi and really need it you can ask the concierge to take you to the business center. I did this to check in for my flight.
You NEED pesos if you're going to the town of Barra. They exchange US dollars at 10/1 so you get ripped off. The front desks exchange rate was 11.5/1 during our stay.
2 hour Snorkelling trip was offered through the hotel for $50US per person. We took it. Was a little disorganized but a fun outing.
Certain days food venues closed to accommodate "IGT" guests. Tuesday was check out/in for this group during our stay. The usual lunch pool Buffett was not open and the grand café lunch ended by 3pm. We had to order food from the pool bar snack menu to get lunch
Monday night the grand café was closed for a special Mexican Fiesta as well. We only found this out by talking to some bartenders. We felt it should have been communicated better to all the guests.
75% of the time we were asked to sign a bill for our food. It always showed the prices and then a total of $0. When ordering drinks occasionally we were asked for our room number.
We met a local couple who were staying at the resort with just breakfast for two and paid $150/night. This same package is advertised in the lobby as $249/night.
90% of the guests are over 50 and golfing. Most of the guests are with a company called IGT. They have their own bar area on the 4th floor. We got drinks there one night with no hassle but it seems like their little part of the hotel.
Lobby bar- fantastic tequila shots! Knowledgeable staff with great English. Piano player every night

Things to Do

I took the sunset yoga on the beach 3 times and it was very relaxing. The instructor is nice. Bring shorts !
Play Tennis - Bring your own balls & tennis racquet though
Table tennis by pool- staff will play with you
Water volley ball
Enjoy a hand rolled cigar from the merchant on the "R" floor
My boyfriend was up for beach volleyball everyday but only one day was there one other guest who wanted to play. They staff played with them which was nice.
We used the kayaks 4 times and they are easily maneuvered through the shallow waters around Barra.
Take the water taxi to Barra and walk the streets. Many shops and restaurants.
Pool aerobics every day
Try a "Miami Vice" drink
Hotel walking tour
Wednesday Barra "tourist trap" market
Walk around the Marina - lots of beautiful boats & fish to see

Things to Bring

BUG SPRAY- use it every day
Water shoes would be useful
Hairdryer - the hotel ones overheat and you have to hold the "on" button the entire time in use

Who will Enjoy this Resort?

If you are going here with IGT you will enjoy your stay. You guys basically run the show here through out the winter. The golf course is spectacular. 23rd best in Mexico.
If you are a couple or a single traveler looking for serenity, peace, and good food this is solid choice.
If you are high energy and looking for a fun night life and lots of company under 40 - look elsewhere.

Positives

On arrival we were greeted with cold drinks at the check in desk
Bellboys took our bags to our room
Bed was perfect - firm
The pools are VERY clean
Hotel and Room was clean
Drinks are not watered down like at most resorts
Lots of bottled water in room
Pool bartender - Fransisco makes the best drinks and is very nice to chat with
Air conditioned gym
I requested a king bed which we were very happy we got
The view from our patio to the left was beautiful, the marina and the town of Barra.
Very quiet at night
The room itself was big including a large bathroom with tub and separate stand up shower.
The toilet/bidet were in a separate room from the sink which was nice.
Live music every night by the pool area
The TVs are old tube TVs but they work fine. No one coming here to watch tv anyways!
The first two mornings I forgot to leave a tip for house keeping but our room was still beautifully cleaned. The next 7 nights I tipped housekeeping and they did a few extra things, folded clothes, lined up all my shoes etc.
The location is great for people that want to explore the town of Barra.
Water taxi runs continuously 24 hours
The weather was PERFECT. No rain and +28c/82f every day
Food was good
Air conditioning in room worked well

Negatives

Wifi didn't work in our room and is patchy around the entire hotel
We went in the hot tub one night and it was very dirty. Though it looked clean other days when we checked it out.
Bugs. They are small so you won't notice them. They bite though. We're both covered in bites.
Smoking allowed at pool, terraces...pretty much anywhere except the non-smoking rooms & indoor restaurants
There should be a more direct route to the lagoon/beach.
The bartenders rarely service the beach.
Evening turn down service not necessary. They often came while we were trying to get ready for dinner.
Certain guests were permitted to make reservations for the a la cartes days in advance, but we were not. Even though we were the first people to make reservations one day, the earliest time we could have dinner was 9:30pm.
No drink service at hammocks
I tried to collect Wyndham points here but this is not a Wyndham resort anymore they say
They have food Room Service & Sushi Bar, but it is NOT included with the All Inclusive package
We were on the 2nd floor and asked about moving to a higher floor but were told if we did we would not have a king bed, so we stayed on the 2nd floor.
We were at the very end of the hotel and to the right of our room was a massive hill side wall. Because of this there was rarely sun on our patio.
It was a long walk to everything. Were both in our 30's and opted to pack our bags for the day when we left for breakfast in the morning so we wouldn't have to trek back to the room too much.
My boyfriend had bought two pairs of earrings for his nieces. We had them hidden in a piece of luggage we were using for dirty clothes. One day we came back to the room to find housekeeping had taken all our dirty clothes out of our luggage and put them in a plastic bag. One pair of earrings on the floor and the other pair missing. Maybe this was meant to be helpful but it was very intrusive.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on a higher floor as central as possible to avoid a lot of walking

First and foremost I would like to thank you so much for taking the time to share with us all these comments concerning your recent stay at the Grand Isla Navidad Resort.

It is a really good help to get your feedback with all and every detailed comments, where we are able to identify opportunity areas to start with changes for improvement to get a real Quality Service. I would like to mention some issues where we are immediately working on such as, supervising service on the beach and hammocks, to keep operational training for maids concerning cleaning details in the room every day and service standards, besides the reservation procedures to have a dinner at Antonio´s or La Terraza restaurant is emphasized according to our policies.

We want to mention the effort we´re applying to get access to high speed internet at the area with the company that provide this kind of service. Also as you might know the hotel is surrounded by lush vegetation that comes with this king of insects or bugs which of course we do our best to keep them away.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience that you may have experienced during your stay. We want you to know that our main concern is total guest satisfaction.

Thank you again for sharing your comments! Let me tell you that we are already working to improve the areas of opportunity you have mentioned.

We hope that you will afford us another opportunity to regain your trust.

We live in Mexico and have been in this hotel's vicinity many times, however, this is our first stay.
It has all the amenities you would expect from a top resort and the staff is exceptionally trained and willing to help in anyway they can. Next trip will play on their 27 hole golf course as it looks, challenging for every level of player. There breakfast buffet was also better than expected.

Room Tip: Higher floors have the best view and even if you get twin beds, they are long enough for someone who...
