“BEAUTIFUL views!! The top of the world!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2014

I rented a car and made it up the gravely dirt road, to this beautiful outlook of the whole island! Rano Kau is a dead volcano, BUT once you pull over and look inside, it just takes your breath away, I didn;t want to leave! I just couldn't believe how beautiful and clean this area of the world was!

A short drive further is a small museum that tells the story of the people who once lived on the island and their stone huts that still stand. Another breathtaking views of the ocean below, theres a small uninhabited island off the coast of that!

“Rano Kau Has A Beautifuland Interesting Crater.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2014

The Rano Kau is a huge extinct volcano with an interesting Crater. It is a nice walk around the volcano. There were lots of tourists walking around and taking photographs. This is near Orongo.

“crater and stonehouses”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2014

well you can see the crater from outside at the mirador- the 60USD entry fee for the stonehouses I think is not worth it

“Historical context required for full appreciation - go with a guide”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2013

Rano Kau is laced with island and cultural history and dramatic beauty. You can appreciate the beauty by yourself but you really need to go with a guide to understand the historical significance of the location including the birdman competition and the use of the various buildings on the site.

For photographers, even with a wide angle lens, it's impossible to capture the scale and beauty of the crater - you need to put the camera down and remember it in your mind.

“Good views to the see and the crater”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2013

Go on a guided tour to know the history of the place and the birdman competition. If you go on your own there is a booklet with planty of information at the entrance
just a morning is enough to walk all the place, Orongo village and the crater of Rano Kau.
Even if the morning is hot take clothes because at 500m high the Wind is a bit cold.
