“A place not to miss!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2013 via mobile

La Portena is exactly what I was looking for when I came to Argentina. It's a place when you forget the stress of the city, and you will never wanna leave! The people there are very welcoming and will make you feel at home the minute you get there. The Estancia is full of history, with beautiful buildings in this amazing property the used to be owned by Ricardo Guiraldes. You will live the typical gaucho experience there, between the amazing Asado served at lunch where everyone gets to eat together (you wont go hungry), the yummy typical food served at tea time, the music played by gauchos and the shows that will give you a good sight on the life style. The horse back ridding is great and not to be missed, the horses are really easy going and beautiful, and you get to go with a lovely gaucho! I wont say too much, but if you're looking for the Argentinian gaucho experience, you really need to go there! Thanks again Cata and Gonzalo, It was an amazing experience, hope to see you soon!

We went straight from the Airport to the Estancia and it was magic. The grounds are beautiful and the buildings charming. Plenty of history, but the key is nature. Thanks to Catalina and her lovely family, our first steps in Argentina were wonderful.
Food was delicious and plentiful and everyone in the staff made us feel welcome and was very attentive.
Absolutely perfect.

This estate is full of history and details to discover. Owned some years ago, by Ricardo Guiraldes, well-known Argentinean author of Don Segundo Sombra, a book that recounts the story of gaucho life, this farm still keeps the flavor of gauchos. The current owners (young couple Gonzalo and Catalina) are your main hosts, very helpful and service oriented. Horseback riding is a must. The property is full of nice surroundings and places where you will enjoy nature. I loved the ''asado" accompanied by the gaucho guitar and songs. No restaurant, they have mealtimes of homemade delicious food. To get there, once you leave the paved road, you will find a dirty road for two miles, be careful if recently rained or it is raining because you will need a 4x4 vehicule.

Room Tip: Choose "Ricardo Guiraldes" room

Since returning from our three week trip to Argentina, my husband and I have been constantly reminding each other of how wonderful, kind, and welcoming everyone was at the estancia. We really liked getting to know everyone and becoming a part of daily life.

The nice thing about staying out here is that it's more social than staying at a regular hotel - if you want it to be (you can also keep to yourself and it's very peaceful). For example, at lunch, they set up a big table, and you sit with other guests and eat lots of good food and chat. A gaucho plays music. After lunch, you can all sit together and watch a horse show in the front yard. It's very idyllic.

Coming out for a day would be fine, but we also really enjoyed staying overnight. There was plenty to explore (animals to play with - our favorites were the farm dogs and the baby pigs - horses to ride, walks to take) and we liked watching the estancia come to life in the morning.

The food was delicious (all home made), and there was so much of it. You will definitely not go hungry.

It's important to understand that this is not a luxury experience. If you want that, you should go somewhere else, because you will be disappointed. Our opinion was that we think it's better (and you can find luxury in plenty of other places in Argentina). It's rustic and simple and the people make it special.

It was perfect for us as we are both fascinated by gaucho culture and wanted to take it slow for a few days.

We spent two nights at Estancia La Portena de Areco with our 4 year old twin daughters. We loved the horse riding, feeding the pigs, geese, ducks etc and in particular the warmth of the hosts Catalina and Gonzalo as well as the rest of the staff. Horse rides were customized for the age of our kids or for grown ups. We also enjoyed a "gaucho show" with horses as well as the folkloric songs. The kids loved playing in the playground, and hanging around the fireplace. We got to meet travelers from different countries who would come to spend the day. Food was very good too. Highly recommended!

I enjoyed a lovely day here with friends while traveling in Argentina. We didn't stay here overnight so I have no feedback on rooms but the property was beautiful and the new owners were welcoming, helpful and eager to show us around the estate. The food was amazing and plentiful. We has a relaxing afternoon complete with a tour on horseback with one of the gauchos. While the relaxed experience was perfect for my friends and I, anyone looking for a more structured and activity packed afternoon may be disappointed, although I wouldn't trade my time relaxing in the shade under the trees, sipping wine and eating fresh made empanadas for anything. My only criticism was that as we were all beginners riding horses, a bit more instruction would have been helpful. Luckily, the horses were all very calm and didn't require much "driving". I would definitely come back here again if I ever make it back to Buenos Aires!
