“Shame about the bedroom....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2006

We stayed 2 nights at the Dragon over the August bank hol weekend. When we booked (2 weeks before) the only remaining room available was a standard room at £60 per night.
Overall, whilst we enjoyed our stay, the room left something to be desired, ie space and a comfortable bed! We travel a lot, and book a range of accommodation, and normally accept minor shortcomings as part of the experience. The room, however, was really too small for a double, as you could barely walk around the bed. To make it worse, there was very limited storage space to put luggage, hang clothes, etc. We managed as we were only there 2 nights, but negotiating your way around the room was a bit like an assault course. A week would have been very uncomfortable. To make it worse, the mattress had seen better days (very very soft) and we didn't get a good nights sleep.
The rest of the hotel was fine, in a good location, and peaceful, just off the main road. Re earlier comments, we have a Ford Focus and negogiated the narrow passageway up to the rear car park without any scrapes!
We had a lovely meal in the restaurant which was good quality, well presented and good value for money. The staff were friendly and we also enjoyed breakfast (choice of traditional cooked, or kippers).
We would highly recommend that you book a superior room, as we understood from the staff that these had been recently refurbished. It would be worth paying the extra.
Other restaurant recommendation - The Bear in Crickhowell. We had a lovely meal in that Hotel's high quality restaurant - very nice if a little pricey, but worth it for a special occasion.
Other things to do in the area - we really enjoyed a boat trip on the Brecon Canal from Talybont-on-Usk - £30 for 2hrs - beautiful scenery and good fun trying to steer the boat!

5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2006

We have just returned from a lovely two week driving holiday of Wales. Mountains, sea coast, green fields and sheep! Sheep are everywhere! We stayed in chain hotels, B&B's, a real castle and at the Dragon Hotel Pub. The Dragon Hotel is quaint, clean and comfortable. We had a twin room at the back of the building so it was very quiet. The bathroom had an individual heater which you could control yourself so we slept with the window open and enjoyed the fresh country air and yet have a "toasty warm bathroom" for morning. Breakfast was also very nice, plentiful, delicious and well presented in the main dining room. Parking could be a problem in a busier season. We had a mid-size rental car and it just wouldn't fit through the opening to the off street parking area for the hotel. There are "scars" on the hotel from other person's attempts. We had been warned by reading another trip advisor review! Parking at no charge was available on the street between 6 pm. and 9:30 am.
The town is small and easy to walk in. We stayed only one night and enjoyed our evening with a meal at the "Bear Hotel". (2 min. walk away from the Dragon Hotel.) Prices for food were the same for both places and the menu's were similar. The "Bear" had more people dining and the atmosphere was very warm and friendly on the cool rainy night. We finished our evening with a "window shopping stroll" back to the Dragon. Hotel cost which included breakfast and all taxes ($140.00 CAD) A pub meal at the "Bear Hotel" for two adults including two pints of beer. ($54.00 CAD)

Nice little village pub-hotel on the little high-street. Centuries old with indivdually styled rooms. Nice, welcoming staff. Little restaurant with surprisingly good food.
Entrance to car-park seems extremely narrow, but you will be able to squeeze in - provided you know your car!
