“Third time not lucky....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2012

Went to the Bell to eat last Saturday evening, the third time we'd been. Having had the triple cooked chips and the lovely steaks on the previous two occasions, I was expecting more of the same. Everything went well and we got our drinks and were seated quickly. For starters we had the soup of the day (cream of tomato), the fish cake and the bread and olives. The soup was very thick and a little granular in texture & the fish cake was not evenly heated and came with sweet chilli sauce instead of the sauce on the menu with no mention or apology.

We were most disappointed with the steaks. We ordered three 8oz rumps, 2 medium and one medium to well done. The steaks arrived and were completely different sizes, one was a tiny finger shaped steak whilst the other two were significantly larger! And the triple cooked chips just didn't seem to be the same, they didn't have the mild taste of garlic and weren't as chunky or deliciously crispy as we had had on our previous visits. We had to chase up the pepper sauce that
we had ordered as it didn't come out at the same time as the steaks.

There were two waitresses on duty, one of whom looked like she would really rather not be there and made me feel rather uncomfortable, never smiling and having a dead pan face all the time.

When the bill was paid, the man at the bar asked whether we had enjoyed our meal and when it was mentioned that we had been a couple of time previously and that we hadn't enjoyed it as much this time, nothing was said in way of apology and no reduction was offered to the bill!

I would have had mo hesitation in recommending this pub to friends but now I would not based on our most recent visit. I'm wondering whether the chef was off or has changed? Unfortunately, I think we will be looking for another local eatery....

“Great B&B in Brecon Beacons”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2012

We really enjoyed our stay at the Bell. It is a lovely and charming B&B with good sized rooms, tasty evening meals and sumptuous breakfasts (which were freshly prepared fry ups to order-impressive). It was great value for money both for the rooms and the generously portioned meals.
The rooms/bathrooms was very clean and tidy with ample toilettries and towels and the beds were very comfortable with enough pillows and warm duvets.

The owners' (2 brothers) friendliness and hospitality definitely made such a difference and they accommodated all our needs.

The location is very good to travel around the Brecons.

If you sleep early, it can be tricky as sometimes they have music events in the pub below which you can hear in your rooms so it's best to get a drink andn join in the fun downstairs. It's usually done by 11.30pm. Otherwise check ahead what events they have for that night.

I really recommend this B&B.

“Awful food!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2012 via mobile

We had to wait for an hour for mashed potato to be cooked to order! - when it arrived it was lumpy and tasteless, the red onion gravy tasted like instant gravy and had raw red onions in it and the three different sausages all tasted the same! - very bland, tasteless meal, will never go back. We ordered at 6pm when the restaurant opened and three of the meals we ordered were unavailable! Apparently the chef started work at 6pm so he obviously doesn't bother to get in to work early enough to prep for food!!

“A pleasing find!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2012 via mobile

We visited for Sunday lunc and it was a very pleasant visit. We had the two course menu which isn't as cheap as other places in the vicinity but at £14.95 was worth every penny. We had a four year old with us and the staff were able to cater for his needs also- it was very welcoming to children whilst being a quiet and traditional environment without all the gimmicks. If I had one apquibble, I would say that the soup was a little salty but with this quality and quantity I can live with that!

“Don't bother !!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2012 via mobile

It went downhill from the moment that two of the meals we wanted weren't available ! Ordered sausage and mash with red onion gravy only to be told the mash wasn't ready and we could wait if we wanted ..we did and when it turned up it was supposed to be three different types but they all tasted the same .. The mash was lumpy and the red onion gravy was bisto with raw.. Yes raw! red onions .. We also ordered triple cooked chips that were obviously frozen chips that had been barely cooked once !
Should have complained but we were just glad to leave ..
It's a real shame because the pub actually looks really nice from the outside
