“Excellent location and outstanding food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2012

Tucked away just outside the Brecon Beacons, the Cambrian Mountains are just as challenging, and the nearby Elan Valley offers easy walking without so many hills! The Lasswade Hotel is comfortable although a bit tired in places, but the proprietors Roger and Emma, are welcoming and entertaining (Roger) and full of local facts and figures. The Lasswade is a 4* restaurant, with rooms, and has 2 rosettes for food. Roger certainly "talks the talk" when it comes to cooking. There was a good choice of meals, with a different menu each night. The meals were delicious!
It is worth visiting this hotel even if you don't want to do any walking, as the scenery is spectacular.

This is most definitely a ‘Restaurant with Rooms’. The restaurant is clearly their main focus and I was disappointed to still hear loud voices coming from the restaurant below at 11pm on a Monday night, especially as I had to be up for work rather early.

I was allocated the twin room - The ‘Green’ room - which supposedly has a loo with a view according to the website. Well, unless you’d count tiles and a fake plant as a view, I’d be inclined to change that statement!

The TV is tiny but the room is generally comfortable and has the amenities you would need – tea making facilities, hairdryer, soaps, alarm radio, plenty of plug sockets! Unfortunately the shower was just a dribble which I always find disappointing - nothing beats a nice powerful shower.

There is free wifi in the building which is very useful as I used it to scope out the local area. Travelling alone makes it difficult to find somewhere to eat, and as I didn’t fancy the fine dining downstairs, I thought I’d look elsewhere. Unfortunately, it’s all fine dining restaurants around here, with a few pubs strewn around. I walked up to one and discovering a couple arguing outside the door and a sensing rather ‘local’ feel about the place, kept walking. Another seemed friendly enough but busy so I went to the final one and, as there was nowhere else to go, ordered some food… It seems that all that’s on offer in this town is fine dining or cheesy chips!

I was only staying in this area as I was working nearby and would not return through choice. There is not a lot here to do and I found the owners of Lasswade to be a little too attentive. I was reminded at least three times to book myself in for next year…which I just found a little too desperate! I’m sure they were just trying to be friendly.

I had a simple breakfast but it was very tasty. They were very generous with the juice too as I wasn’t a tea drinker.

Overall I was a little disappointed by the place and think the price for the rooms, despite being Show week, was very expensive. I had stayed one night at the Lake Country House prior to this so the direct comparison was jarring.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the house have the best view.

This review has been addressed with the Company (who made the booking) not the individual. They are very embarrassed and dissapointed that their employee should write all this especially as they have been very happy with everything and been using Lasswade for a number of years.

Roger and Emma offer such a friendly welcome and their local knowledge is extremely helpful for planning your stay in this delightful part of Wales. Emma is a charming hostess and Roger, a chef of wide experience, prepares inspired and memorable dishes, utilizing local produce, and loves to chat! The rooms are cosy and clean, the views delightful. All of which will certainly bring us back again.

We have just spent a fabulous long weekend at this country house hotel. Roger and Emma made us feel very welcome. The attention to detail and friendliness was extraordinary. They helped us plan our days out in the beautiful surrounding countryside and we had lots of interesting chats. Roger is a fantastic chef and all of our meals were delicious. We shall certainly return!

Lanwrtyd Wells is fascinating but Roger and Emma make it home. Roger, a chef, cooks up fresh local produce and makes it into heavenly dishes. Emma hosts and cheers up the conversations. Lasswade's sitting room is filled with books and interesting tidbits about their life and the life of the house. We had three rooms. They were all clean, private, and cosy with great views of valleys. The soaps in the rooms are organic and fresh smelling. You can use the house as a base to tour about for horses, hill walking, rally driving, red kites, or the great summer events in the town. We only stayed two nights but I would happily spend a week. This is a great place to stay.

Room Tip: Stay in rooms on the back of the house. You will have unending views of the hills.

My husband and I recently spent three wonderfully relaxing days with Roger and Emma who made us really welcome. This place really is a home from home and the food was second to none! As keen walkers we adored the countryside and surrounding walks and would most definitely stay again.

Roger Stevens is a very good chef. He delighted us with a superb dinner starting with a medley of mushrooms, followed by duck, cooked to be succulent, followed by a very tasty dessert all washed down with a lovely bottle of red. Breakfast was delight of fresh, local ingredients, including some hand carved bacon, very tasty eggs.Roger used to be a mechanic in a motor racing team and it is his attention to quality and detail that shows up in all his dishes.Excellent ingrdients are orchestrated for maximum effect. The result is very satisfying. If you are in the area swerve over to Roger's and you will be delighted.
