“birthday celebrations”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2012

This is a hotel in a beautiful location, Barmouth is not a particularly pleasing town and the weekend we were there there was quad biking on the beach and motorbikes which for us killed the town but fortunately we were on the top of the hill in this beautiful hotel with outstanding views and i love sunsets .
Our bedroom was booked late so we did not get a room with a view which i would have loved ,,hopefully next time!
the staff who waited on at breakfast and dinner were outstanding with just the right manner and were very attentive without being over bearing
the food was excellent and we were suprised that they are not in the top ten restaurants in Barmouth as we did try the most recommended restaurant .
Yes the bedroom could do with a face lift, but the bed was very comfortable . we would have no hesitation in recomending this hotel whose staff made my birthday weekend very special and of course the scenery in this county is some of the best in Wales

Room Tip: you musty have a room with aview

Hello flowersdancing:

Thanks for your balanced review of our venue. As you rightly say, the local views and surrounding countryside are stunning, and merit repeat visits at different times of the year. If you were thin king of returning, it's always worth checking direct with us as to available rooms, as third-party sites do not always reflect our availability.

I'll pass your comments on to the staff; it is always gratifying to know that guests appreciate them going the extra mile to make a special stay extra special. Likewise, your lovely comment regarding the food has been relayed to our chef.

Had eaten here for two of our anniversary meals when we were on holiday which were always wonderful so always wanted to stay. Surprised my husband for his birthday with 3 nights away. Ty'r Graig Castle is the most wonderful place to stay. We stayed in the 4 poster turret room which was amazing, I dont think the pictures do it justice, bed looked beautiful and the views were amazing - keeping the window ajar at night you can hear the waves which is very soothing. Every single member of staff was so professional and nothing was too much trouble. The full english breakfast was extreamly clean and sitting in the conservatory overlooking the sea whilst eating it is fantastic. The lounge area is quite and a very calm place to relax. There is a very pleasant walk along the promenade into Barmouth which you can easily get to from Ty'r Graig. Will definately stay again. Loved it and thank you to all the staff there.

Room Tip: 4 Poster is great, but im sure all the rooms are wonderful.

Hi Louise,

Thanks so much for your kind words and fulsome praise. We knew you had enjoyed yourselves, and your husband had a great birthday, but didn't realise just how much!

The overall ambience we try to create is relaxing and calm, and it's good to see that we succeeded. To enjoy a meal with the spectacular views from the conservatory must be so good that I'll have to try it myself one evening!

We also pride ourselves on our staff, and I've passed your comments on to them.

It would be lovely to welcome you back sometime in the future.............now what's the date of YOUR birthday, and I'll get it booked in!!

just had a mid week 3 day break, exellent service with attention to detail for guest comfort from the towels to the staff remembering the little things that we asked for like extra tea bags at breakfast ( we like a stronger brew ) relaxing in the guest lounge during the afternoon is a must for those that like to just read and chill out, many thanks for a wonderfull break.

Room Tip: choose the turret rooms with a sea view

Quite a nice little quirky place with pleasant surroundings. We were given notice our room would be small, no problem with the room however the shower was a bit of a squeeze, so if there are larger rooms perhaps specify. Breakfast was good with quite a decent selection and the view from the dining room is lovely.

Hello Gay M

I love the word "Quirky"! We certainly love both the castle and the beautiful countryside location, and hope our feelings and enthusiasm pass to our guests.

As you note, where applicable we do advise that the en-suites are small; the showers etc are standard size, but the space available does mean that there may be little extra room in the en-suite. We do have some larger rooms, so it's always worth discussing requirements when booking.

Our "set you up for the day" breakfast garners regular praise and the view is the whole reason the house was originally built.

We have just had a comfortable 3 day stay in this hotel with an interesting history. Please do not believe the poor review of the 11th August. It sounds like it was posted in a fit of petulance. The standards here are high. The owners were gracious and the staff were polite and attentive. We were pleased with our choice. The weather was foul during our stay, and it was always a pleasure to come back here at the end of the day.

Hello Sailor 62,

Your kind comments are very much appreciated. We do take pride in the standards we set, including the service, so it is always pleasing to hear when it meets the expectation of guests like yourselves.

Unfortunately, the unpredictable weather is something we have no control over, but we were pleased to see that you found it a pleasure to come back to the castle each day. Hopefully you will return for another visit and have better weather.

Rather disappointed with our stay at Ty'r Graig and do not believe it should be classed as a 4* hotel.
The building is undeniably quirky and full of character but as soon as you pull into the car park you can see from the upkeep of the buildings and gardens that it is tired and neglected.
We had a warm welcome from the young guys on reception and they promptly checked us in and insisted on carrying our biggest bag to our room (7). The hotel has amazing views over Barmouth and the Bay but our £194 bought us a view of the car park and the houses opposite. The room was very worn and dated and in need of decorating. The bed was comfortable and the bedding clean but the bed head had a layer of dust on it and the carpet was tatty.
Breakfast was tasty and the young staff were very polite and attentive but it was not the nice peaceful meal in the conservatory we would have liked due to the manager who obviously likes the sound of his own voice and proceeded to talk, quite loudly, to anyone who would listen to his stories of when he was an actor!
In all, our stay was just ok, not worth the money and I would not recommend it as a 4* hotel.

Hello JulesA72,

We were sorry to read that you were disappointed with the Castle. We do try to ensure that everything is as it should be and, far from neglecting the property, we have a constant rolling programme of maintenance. The next major project is the exterior painting, but the appalling weather has made exterior work almost impossible this summer.

Our welcome is something we take great pride in, and we were pleased to see this was to our usual standard. We do make it clear to people reserving the hillside view rooms that they are not sea view and the £97 per night rate is a lesser tariff than a comparable sea-view room. We also make sure that the rate is always reasonably matched against other establishments in the area of relative size and type.

It is very difficult to ignore a 'hearty' conversation started by a guest, but we do agree that the differing needs of other guests, especially at meal times, must be observed. The 4* grading was awarded by Visit Wales in the category of Guest Accommodation and we make no pretence to being a 4* hotel.

We have visited the Ty'r Graig Castle many times for excellent food. The staff are very pleasant and friendly and attend to your every need.

We love the relaxed, warm environment in the Ty'r Graig and the views are amazing.

We can not fault the food at all. Wonderful specials and everything cooked freshly on the day.

We haven't stayed here, but I'm sure the rooms are wonderful with spectacular views over lovely Barmouth.

Highly recommend going to the Ty'r Graig for outstanding food, a warm, relaxed atmosphere and excellent service. Thank you to all the lovely staff.

Hello Catrin N

It’s always good to know that we are catering for the local community as well as visitors to the area, and we do appreciate and value your patronage. In today’s climate of “fast food” we endeavour to create an atmosphere of calm and warmth, which is more than assisted by the beautiful scenery.

Our food is all locally sourced and our chef takes great pride in preparation and presentation. Your comments in respect of both the food and the staff are most welcome, and have been passed to the people concerned.

Most of our rooms have wonderful sea views, with a couple enjoying the splendid vista of the hillside overlooking the bay.
