“A Room with a View ... and a lot more”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013

Many thanks to John and Jupp for a fabulous two-night stay in Barmouth.

The breakfasts are something to relish although we didn't try the full Welsh breakfast. John bakes his own delicious bread (no bread maker, it's done the 'proper' way), and it's hard to choose which of the wonderful array of home-made jams and jellies/marmalades to have on your toast. If you decide on porridge and/or scrambled eggs with or without salmon, both come highly recommended - but there is a lot to choose from and I don't doubt they are all excellent.

If you can stay for more than one night, you should. There is a library containing many books and maps of the area, which are available to borrow. The hosts do a lot of walking and will make good recommendations; another reviewer mentions the circular walk to the top of the hill behind the house, which is very well worth the climb. The views from the top are superb and a just reward for the effort.

John is a Welsh speaker and a native of Barmouth, and is very interesting to talk to about the history of the area. If you want to know how anything is pronounced in Welsh, here is your chance to ask. Jupp is a native German speaker with a delightful Welsh accent!

The room is huge, the bed comfortable, the décor tasteful, everything immaculately clean. The view to the front is wonderful, looking across the river and over the bridge. The room is double glazed so no draughts or noise.

There was no TV or radio in the room, but there is a good internet connection.

So out of 100, I would probably give it at least 110.

Dros y Dwr is a superb B&B! The hosts are very enthuasiastic and helpful in every respect and can honestly not do enough for their guests. Only planned on staying one night but due to the hugely spacious room, amazing breakfast, unsurpassed views of the estuary and really comfortable bed - we were forced to change our plans and stay another night! John and Jupp thanks so much for the stay we loved our time in Barmouth!

We stayed at Dros y Dwr for three nights in July and couldn't recommend it highly enough. From the welcome we received from John & Jupp (tea and freshly baked muffins), to the comfortable, spacious and nicely decorated bedroom, the amazing views over the estuary and the breakfasts.

John and Jupp were able to suggest some great local walks - the panorama walk starting from the end of the street is well worth it.

We would also highly recommend the Bwyty Mawddach restaurant for the food and the views.

Can't wait to come back.

We are from Germany and on the way to Ireland, we stayed for 2 nights in June 2012.
The B&B has lovely and charming rooms, everything clean and a great view to the river, the bridge, the harbour and the sea. We were familiary welcome by Jupp and John and enjoyed the tasty full English breakfast, the afternoon tea and the homemade bread beked by John himself.
We got much phantastic informtaion about Barmouth, Wales etc. and we loverd the very friendly atmosphere. We'll hope, we had not been at Dros y Dwr the last time.
Thank you very much, Jupp and John

I knew that this was going to be a lovely stay from the moment that we arrived and spotted a glowing Galle lamp in the hallway! John and Jupp have got it spot-on in this beautifully presented guest house. This house retains great characater and period appeal whilst feeling contemporary and stylish. The spacious and uncluttered feeling of the rooms has a timeless elegance. You simply relax into the clean and open space of the rooms, Rather than cramming four rooms into each floor the rear rooms, which would otherwise have been small and dark, have been made into en-suite dressing rooms and bathrooms. Each room has a huge amount of space to circulate in which, combined with the spectacular views from the large bay windows, gives you a feeling of space, openness and wellbeing. You definitely know that you are at the seaside !

John and Jupp gave us a really warm welcome, great coffee, cake and breakfast and John's encyclopaedic knowledge of the town gave us an added dimension to our visit. All in all this was a very special stay in a thoughfully planned guest house. We shall certainly return.

We stayed for 2 nights, the house is tastefully decorated throughout, everything clean, new and to a high standard with harbour views. As there are only 3 rooms you feel like you are staying in John & Jupps home rather than a B&B. They are extremely welcoming, on arrival we were offered afternoon tea & homemade cake, delicious! They are happy to help in any way and nothing is too much trouble. The breakfasts were wonderful, with homemade bread, jams and marmalade with as much as you wanted, we definately didn't go hungry! They also have 2 gorgeous, very friendly dogs which if you are a dog lover they'll come and say hello, (but don't come into the main areas if you don't like dogs.) Highly recommended.

I have just arrived back from staying at the B&B in Barmouth “Dros y Dŵr” & I now write about my stay. I had missed my train back to London & thus had to stay in Barmouth for 1 (Tuesday) night. Having previously looked at the Trip Advisor reviews, it was a toss-up between “Dros y Dŵr” & “Sunray Guest House”. I decided to phone “Dros y Dŵr” first, maybe because breakfast was included. Jupp answered the phone & there was a room available. 30 minutes later, I was greeted by Jupp. Jupp showed me my room & it was certainly a lot larger & newer than expected with a fabulous view over the estuary & sea. Jupp treated me to complimentary filter coffee with fruit cake. The coffee was absolutely fantastic.
Barmouth is a very picturesque place, particularly around the harbor & estuary, but it is almost like a semi-ghost town awaiting the next influx of “new industries” (whatever they might be) to fill the numerous empty shops that are scattered around.
In the morning, I had a lovely full English breakfast in the company of my hosts John & Jupp. The actual food was very well presented & delicious. The only question mark I have, was the actually “cooking oil” that the food was cooked in. I had an “after taste” that I am sure was contributable to the cooking oil. Perhaps I am splitting hairs. Great company & a great visit. Many thanks to John & Jupp.
