Arrived at the Stein Inn and was pleasantly surprised by the location which was simply stunning. Gorgeous bay and lovely buiding from the outside. Sadly everything from then deteriorated. The staff in the bar could have not been less welcoming and were bordering on unfriendly. Our biggest complaint was the room. We were not expecting anything outstanding and were prepared for "basic", however the Stein Inn takes this to a new level.
Our "king" bed was 2 singles shoved together (something I really cant stand). The the furniture was very basic & there was no TV (very odd I thought). The worst area was the bathroom. The smell was incredible which we put down to the fact there was a carpet in there which had started to rot with previous guests "missing"! The extractor fan/heater in the bathroom did not work and the towels were threadbare.
The breakfast was fantastic with a good choice and the "waitress" was fantastic and helpful.
In the bar we were treated with what was bordering on rudeness by the barman. The owners did not appear particularily friendly either.
All in all there are much better propositions on Skye & we would not return.

Management Response

It is always disappointing when guests do not advise us of problems at the time of their visit.

1. The king sized bed is a zip and link bed which allows for the bedroom to be both a double and a twin. It is an industry standard type of bed.
2. I am not sure what the reviewer was expecting but the furniture is not basic. We do not have televisions in the rooms because we would like guests to experience the Inn and the surrounds to the full and to escape the trappings of television and telephones. We comment on there being no televisions on our web site.
3. Having gone down on my hands and knees, I can categorically say that the bathroom carpet did not smell nor has it begun to rot. I can only assume that it was a smell from the seashore. The extractor fan had been switched off by a previous guest and the bathroom heater was broken, unbeknown to us. Both matters were easily rectified. Our towels are not sumptuous, but nor are they threadbare.
4.The barman is normally very friendly and has a wealth of local knowledge. He is always willing to pass this information on and to advise people on food and drinks, especially selecting from the choice of over 125 malts.

Despite our best attempts it is sometimes very difficult to please all the people all the time.

Just returned from a short break staying in the small self-catering apartment attached to the hotel. The accommodation was to a high standard (and our dog was welcomed too) ,the service was warm, friendly and welcoming and the food was exceptional. No hesitation about recommending .

“Great character and fab location”

Stein Inn

The Stein Inn simply oozes genuine old world character and charm as you would expect from a place about 400 years old. Add to this its great location...just walk out of the door and the loch is infront of you...and you have something very special.

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and went out of their way to make sure that you enjoyed Skye. The breakfasts were quite simply superb and most of the ingredients sourced both locally and with an eye for animal welfare and ethical production. The bar food was also good but for something a little more gourmet there is the superb Loch Bay seafood restaurant 100 yards away.

We really enjoyed our stay...the sloping floors, smoking log fires etc all add to the experience. Don't expect state of the art power showers, in room movies and the like and then complain...if you do you are completing missing what The Stein Inn is all about!

Great location, overlooking a loch. Cosy bar area, with an incongruous modern end. Smoky fire.
What REALLY lets this place down however, is the staff. They have simply never heard of customer service. Everything seems to be a huge effort and smiles are not forthcoming. You have to eat by their rules, either one of two set dining times in the soulless restaurant, or find a table if you can in the bar (the modern end has very low tables not conducive to eating) and then wait for ages to be served. And the beer was really disappointing too - we tried every one they had over 6 nights and couldn't find one that we really liked.
Don't go here and expect a welcome, you will be sorely disappointed.

We stayed here for a three day break from 26 March 07. On arrival we were warmly welcomed in and shown to our room.

Very cosy room with a low window looking out over Loch Bay - directly at the amazing sunsets we were lucky to get every night of our stay.

We were staying on a b&b basis but ate at the Inn every night - in fact we enjoyed the accommodation and food so much we stayed on an extra night. Excellent value food with specials on every night in addition to the normal menu - and veggies well catered for. Cosy atmosphere and excellent selection of whisky in the bar!

Breakfasts superb, served in the dining room; again with views out over bonnie Loch Bay.

Staff extremely attentiive and friendly and made us feel very much at home and relaxed. Teresa and Angus McGhie, the owners have a real winner here.

We will certainly be returning to the Stein inn and would not hesitate to recommend a stay here; in a stunning part of Skye.
