“Best restaurant for miles”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2014

I ate at the hotel for several nights in the middle of June & the standard of the food was superb.
Consistency makes for a good restaurant and although the menu is a little limited (it's towards the end of a peninsula on an island jutting out into the Atlantic for pity's sake :-) ), everything was cooked to the highest standard and betrays the passion the chef has for doing what he does.

The staff were efficient, professional & friendly. And chef is the sort of chap you'd want to sit down & have a beer or three with.

Booking essential, they were turning away people regularly on each evening I was there.

Even if you're not staying at the hotel, take a detour & get there.

Room Tip: (ignore the "sleep quality" rating - couldn't work out how to reset the thing & as...

My wife and I stayed five nights in May. Joy, Tony and Paul made us very welcome, like long-lost friends. Tony cooked fresh meals every night and we were well fed at breakfast. The wine list was well chosen and the service excellent. Our bedroom had a magnificent view across the loch. This is an ideal location from which to explore Mull.

This is our 4th visit to Mull in the last 5 Years and best so far. We have stayed in 1st class places now in Tobermory, Fionnafort & Salen and this is the only place I would come back to each time I visit. We stayed in one of the Cottages (Pine) and it felt like home from day one, everything works and you will not want for nothing. A very warm welcome was given by Joy, Tony and Paul and it soon felt like we had known them forever. The view and Wildlife is all round the Accomodation and you are in easy reach of all must see places. Food is spot on especially the Chips lol. Brian the local Wildlife Tracker is always looking for Otter and Red Breasts outside of the Hotel and the Sea Eagles are around but as it is Easter, at least one of them were busy on the nest. We also took the Weather as it was a full 7 days of Sun. Tim and Sandra

Room Tip: Both Cottages are lovely and well worth the cost - I did not see the Rooms in the Hotel

You're assured of a warm and friendly welcome at the family-owned Pennyghael; now under new management and looking forward to a bright and successful future. Nothing is too much trouble; with a stunning location (otters, seals, cormorants and eagles are regular breakfast viewings) the atmosphere is warm, cosy and just what you want after a long day exploring Mull. Clean, comfortable rooms (we slept like logs), great food and plenty of it - locally sourced, freshly prepared and cooked. Hearty soups, steak and scrumptious puddings (the raspberry bread and butter pudding is a definite must have!). Did I mention the chips? Have some chips at some point, it might be a good idea to ask for a double portion. There's a great selection of whisky to sample as well. Even though the owners have only been here for a few months they have taken the time to acquaint themselves with the area and can quickly put you in touch with wildlife tours or advise you about places to visit. With a programme of refurbishment planned over the winter months, the hotel will certainly be in high demand so book early to avoid disappointment! We're looking forward to visiting again as soon as we can.

Exhausted upon arrival, our crankiness was immediately diffused by the warm and very accommodating reception of this family-owned and staffed hotel. What was only going to be a one-night's stay, turned into a 4-day home base for us while exploring the Isle of Mull and surrounding islands -- the last stretch of our 3-week self-tour through Scotland. We were promptly informed of all the great day trips to see and do, including how to best see it all. Immaculate bathrooms, relaxing hot showers, comfortable beds. With a convenient location and gorgeous view of the bay, we chose to return each night to watch the sunset from the dining room. Though the menu is limited, it changed daily offering a different cuisine to look forward to prepared by their very personable owner-chef. Don't miss out on the mussels - they were better than any found here in Boston! We will definitely be back!

Enjoy your breakfast whilst watching otters in the bay and sea eagles overhead! We turned up at this hotel drenched and on cycles to be greeted with an offer of putting our wet clothes in the tumble drier overnight. The hotel is under new management. Food was fantastic (fillet steak and baileys cheesecake highly recommended) and the owners were very helpful advising what whisky would suit our taste buds best. A great base to explore Iona and Mull.

Room Tip: ask for a view over the loch

This hotel must be in one of the most stunning locations on Mull.We were well looked after by the friendly new owners who plan to upgrade the decor during the winter months although it is comfortable enough as it is. We stayed for a week in room 5 overlooking the loch and Ben More. Evening meals were freshly cooked using available local produce where possible.Don't miss the mussels ! In the mornings whilst we enjoyed breakfast, especially cooked to order, we were entertained by an otter fishing in the loch. There are also gannets, divers, cormorants and Manx shearwaters around and we came very close to a red deer stag as it made it's way to the woods behind the hotel. There is a sea eagle's nest opposite and an eagle was seen on the loch the previous week but we were still fortunate to see them flying elsewhere. We watched three golden eagles in the glen a short distance away.It was a shame to leave such a beautiful place. We'd choose to stay at this hotel again.
