“Quite the worst hotel I have ever come across.”

Caledonian Hotel

I booked my mother-in-law into the Caley when she came up to visit us this week. When we arrived to check in we were met by the most indifferent receptionist I have ever come across. She gave us the key and gestured off into the distance. We were left to seek out the room which was hidden away along Stalinist corridors, far away from the main part of the hotel.
The corridors were dark and dingy and most unwelcoming. When we finally located the room, we found it to be quite the smallest, shabbiest room you could imagine. Possibly this room was once a cupboard? It just fitted a bed and a small bureau and a bed that you couldn't sit on, as the room was so tiny it was wedged in between the bed and the wall!

The decor was beige and shabby and really depressing. Frankly I was embarrassed to have booked her into the room and so I decided to go and see if another room was available.

I went back to the vague receptionist and told her that we thought the room was tiny and shabby and would it be possible to find another one? She begrudgingly dragged herself from her chair and took us to another room, also up this corridor which was slightly larger. She then left us to it.

The room was again, dingy and shabby and had a charming view of concrete plus the odd workman passing by, from the window. There was no tea making facilities or telephone. The bathroom was basic, though clean at least.

I understand that the hotel was probably busy as it was the bank holiday weekend and also the Feis was taking place, but they do themselves no favours by offering such shabby rooms and shoddy customer service. I was speechless.

At this point I decided enough was enough and we should try and find my mother-in-law alternative accommodation. We were fortunate to discover the SUILVEN bed and breakfast, which is just outside Ullapool in Rhue. (3 miles North) and was as far removed from the Caley as you could imagine. Clean, welcoming rooms, gorgeous views and most importantly friendly Highland hospitality which is what it is all about really? Oh, and it was considerably cheaper too.

I have never written a review like this before, and don't think of myself as the complaining type, but the Caledonian Hotel was just so dreadful I decided to make an exception!

My advice would be to steer well clear!!

“The Ullapool Caley was right up our Alley!!”

Caledonian Hotel

May 5, 2008

We stayed at the Caledonian Hotel from the 2nd - 4th May. On arrival, the receptionist was friendly and polite. A quick check in and we were given room 108. We were on the ground floor and although we didn't have a view to speak of, you only use your room as a base.

Room was clean, quite spacious with 2 single beds, although we had booked a double and due to a festival being on at the same time they were unable to change the room to a double. Not a major problem and the young guy behind reception was very helpful and did try his best!

Beds were comfy and you had a duvet rather than sheets, which we prefer. Plenty storage space, we also had a small cloakroom between the bedroom and the bathroom. This was also where the tea & coffee making facilites were which was also well stocked.

Bathroom was of good size and very clean with bath and shower. Shower worked well with loads of hot water.
We also liked the positions of the electrical points which are near the mirrors. What the room did have was the biggest lightbulb we have ever seen!

Maybe the room wasn't freshly decorated but it was value for money and I have stayed in more expensive hotels and they have not been as nice, or as big and had as much storage space.

Breakfast was tip top! Large, airy dining room which served buffet style with cereals & fruits, porridge, fruit juice, and full scottish breakfast - with soft fried eggs, mmm!! With tea, coffee and toast being served at your table.

We did not have dinner at the hotel so can't comment on the food.

We had an Indian meal on our first night, Ullapool Tandoori (Jasmine), which was at the entrance to the caravan park. Very tasty food, excellent quick service and prices were reasonable.

On our second night we ate at the Seaforth Inn which also served excellent food, especially the tapas selection.

We also went on the 4hr cruise to the Summer Isles on the Summer Queen. We stayed for about an hour on Tanera Mhor, it is the only inhabited island in the group of Summer Isles. It was great half day and worth the £25 per head!

Overall, an excellent weekend break at a lovely hotel and location.

The room and en suite were very basic and tired looking, although this was reflected in the price. Breakfast was self service which is quite nice but the fried eggs were hard!! Overall not a great experience and wouldn't recommend.

“Roll together!”

Stayed overnight at this hotel with my wife and cousins from Canada. The two rooms we had were clean enough, but the beds in both rooms were in a shocking state. Apart from being tatty, they both suffered from terminal "roll-together". I have contacted the hotel's head office twice, but, as yet, have had no reply.

From the moment we arrived for a 2 night break this was a nightmare. We checked in late afternoon - to the apparent indifference to the man on reception. Were given a room at the furthest point from reception - wondered if there was hotel transport to take us there!!!! The room was musty, mouldy and the bathroom was disgusting - apeared to be staff quarters but with hindsight staff probably had better living accommodation. We went to the dining room to be told that we could not sit at the table we had chosen and was pointed in the general direction of the back of the dining room, after 20 minutes they decided to serve us, 1st couse was OK, 20 minutes after we had finished 1st couse we were told 'you can go and get youre main course if you want' - very good service!!! The second day was exactly the same - I noticed other guests had pets with them - this was the final straw - dogs etc in the hotel!!! I might add that I checked in the clean part of the bathroom mirror and we definately didnt have 2 heads!!!
I would strongly advise that if you are looking for a peaceful few days break go to Ullapool, it is beautiful, just avoid the Caledonian Hotel. If you want rudeness, ignorance and uncomfortable and dirty room then go here.
