I booked my mother-in-law into the Caley when she came up to visit us this week. When we arrived to check in we were met by the most indifferent receptionist I have ever come across. She gave us the key and gestured off into the distance. We were left to seek out the room which was hidden away along Stalinist corridors, far away from the main part of the hotel.
The corridors were dark and dingy and most unwelcoming. When we finally located the room, we found it to be quite the smallest, shabbiest room you could imagine. Possibly this room was once a cupboard? It just fitted a bed and a small bureau and a bed that you couldn't sit on, as the room was so tiny it was wedged in between the bed and the wall!
The decor was beige and shabby and really depressing. Frankly I was embarrassed to have booked her into the room and so I decided to go and see if another room was available.
I went back to the vague receptionist and told her that we thought the room was tiny and shabby and would it be possible to find another one? She begrudgingly dragged herself from her chair and took us to another room, also up this corridor which was slightly larger. She then left us to it.
The room was again, dingy and shabby and had a charming view of concrete plus the odd workman passing by, from the window. There was no tea making facilities or telephone. The bathroom was basic, though clean at least.
I understand that the hotel was probably busy as it was the bank holiday weekend and also the Feis was taking place, but they do themselves no favours by offering such shabby rooms and shoddy customer service. I was speechless.
At this point I decided enough was enough and we should try and find my mother-in-law alternative accommodation. We were fortunate to discover the SUILVEN bed and breakfast, which is just outside Ullapool in Rhue. (3 miles North) and was as far removed from the Caley as you could imagine. Clean, welcoming rooms, gorgeous views and most importantly friendly Highland hospitality which is what it is all about really? Oh, and it was considerably cheaper too.
I have never written a review like this before, and don't think of myself as the complaining type, but the Caledonian Hotel was just so dreadful I decided to make an exception!
My advice would be to steer well clear!!
